In this global pandemic we contribute to the fragility and resilience of each other, each nation and tribe occupying a different space on the spectrum. The complexity of Covid-19 continues to unfold before us as a multi-system agent sowing and revealing discord while testing our social fabric. Destabilized ground and lungs devoid of air became a catalyst for a global revolution. The landscape shudders luminescent with promise or destruction. Excited to share that the second phase of Art on the Grid is now on view! Art on the Grid responds to this historic moment. Our lives have been completely transformed by the devastation of a global pandemic and the rise of one of the largest social justice movements in modern history. The complete exhibition is now on view throughout the city and live on Public Art Fund's website. Please make sure to check out the interactive map on PAF’s website showing the 50 artworks on 500 bus shelter locations throughout the five boroughs. Truth.” Runs through December 1st at the @freedomcenter in Cincinnati, Oh with @smithsonian @sitesexhibitions For Carter G Woodson , 50 x 50, hand sculpted paper inkjet print. A new three-year, 10-city traveling exhibition from the @smithsonianpresents the narrative of a nation through the profiles of significant African American men who are icons in the country’s historical and cultural landscape. “Men of Change” highlights revolutionary men—including Muhammad Ali, James Baldwin, Ta-Nehisi Coates, W.E.B. Du Bois and Kendrick Lamar—whose journeys have altered the history and culture of the country through politics, sports, science, entertainment, business and religion. Each biography is paired with original artwork by a noted artist that accentuates the subjects’ individual legacies. The exhibition weaves a collective tapestry of what it is to be an African American man, past and present, and the legacy that only strengthens across generations. Teacher Professional Development Workshop: Art as Activism Monday, January 21, 2019 1–3 pm Meet in the Education Studios, 1st Floor Join us for a day of action in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, at Brooklyn Museum, with two professional development workshops for educators to reflect on the intersection of art and racial justice and enliven their teaching practices through art engagement. Facilitated by artist Nate Lewis and art education advocate Minkie English of PrintbyPrint Group, this workshop invites educators to take an active role in creating a more equitable society through art-making. First, explore the intersections of empathy, race, history, and the human body expressed in Lewis' work. Then, engage in an art-making project with easy and innovative ways to expand students' knowledge and promote social justice through art, using methods that reduce the resource barriers in classroom art-making. Some things to look for in an #artist’s work apart from nr.1 you liking it personally no matter what others say, is if his/her work is consistent, does it look matured in it’s own personal way, is the quality there. And if they have their own distinct personal style even better! You can recognize a Nate Lewis right away just like a #GeorgeCondo a #KehindeWiley a #MickaleneThomas or a #DerrickAdams. The 2 posted works by Lewis are now joining the latter 3 and several other prominent #AfricanAmerican & #African #artists all part of the same privately funded #BlackArt Foundation in #Detroit opening in September bringing #art to the local community to encourage & inspire black youth. •••• From a recent article on #Artsy.net “6 Artists Pushing the Limits of Paper” At first glance, Nate Lewis’s work looks like it’s been adorned with embroidery, rather than paper and ink. His tender portraits and images of protesters gathering in the streets are sliced, scored, and punctured in such dense and precise patterns that their surfaces resemble beadwork. Trained as a registered nurse, Lewis approaches the medium with empathy. “It’s about assessing the paper, responding to it, and giving it what it needs,” he explains. “My approach is to treat paper like a complex organism with a dynamic, hidden life.” Lewis is currently using a residency at Dieu Donné (a paper-making studio & gallery in the Brooklyn Navy Yard) to continue his exploration into paper’s staggering variety, as well as its expressive potential. “It’s just a simple material,” he says, “but at that same time, the variability within the many kinds of paper is nuanced and vast.” He just finished a 6 month residency at #PioneerWorks.
