Contemporary art plays a critical role in addressing pressing issues such as the climate crisis, creating paths to upend traditional ways of thinking about our relationship with nature and non-human life. The artists in the publication entitled “The world to come : art in the age of the Anthropocene” make people see the world in a new way. They “engage, contest, and reveal the makings of challenges including colonialism, capitalism, technology, population growth, inequality, displacement, and issues of law, violence, and social justice.” (Page 5, Kerry Oliver-Smith).
This is one of the publications we would recommend for the world leaders at the United Nation’s Climate Change Conference COP27, which began this week.

On this Mindful Monday Reminder to keep creating and don't ask for permission to make your work/craft/calling. Posted @withregram • @artiishak I heard “No” so often this year it feels like a nickname. On rejection by @inspiredtowrite & @ericasbreamcast which gave me some perspective and a bit of hope 🌱 #mindfulmonday #beinganartist #artassocialpractice #cultureshift #keepcreating #artasactivism https://www.instagram.com/p/CXuCAD0FnNe/?utm_medium=tumblr
I’m just tired. ⠀ I grew up fighting for my people. Loving, educating and healing through activism. My heart broke when I finally realized the world wouldn’t change before I graduated high school or maybe even in my lifetime. ⠀ So I learned to cope. Focus on my art and my creativity to help ME heal and pray that that healing could touch the world. ⠀ But that doesn’t make living in THIS world any easier. Black people are tied together through a generational thin thread that cuts deep every single time we lose someone to HATE and FEAR. ⠀ I’m just tired. Tired of patching myself up after every murder. George...Ahmaud...Breonna I carry you with me. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #stopkillingus #Icantbreathe #imtired #imangry #blacklivesstillmatter #blacklivedalwaysmatter #justiceforgeorgefloyd #justiceforusall #whatsnext #whatsleft #GeorgeFloyd #AhmaudArbery #BreonnaTaylor #Toomanytoname #blackmeniloveyou #blackwomeniloveyou #artasactivism #creativitytoheal #toexpress #wipeitdownchallenge #heal #istillcantbreathe #enough #reparations #mentalhealth #letstalkaboutit https://www.instagram.com/p/CAv6YUaFFWe/?igshid=1aqra5jm7o4sc

“An artist’s duty, as far as I’m concerned, is to reflect the times. I think that is true of painters, sculptors, poets, musicians. As far as I’m concerned, it’s their choice, but I CHOOSE to reflect the times and situations in which I find myself. That, to me, is my duty. And at this crucial time in our lives, when everything is so desperate, when everyday is a matter of survival, I don’t think you can help but be involved. Young people, black and white, know this. That’s why they’re so involved in politics. We will shape and mold this country or it will not be molded and shaped at all anymore. So I don’t think you have a choice. How can you be an artist and NOT reflect the times? That to me is the definition of an artist.” -Nina Simone #SupportBlackArt #NinaSimone #AnArtistsDuty #ReflectTheTimes #ArtAsResistance #ArtasActivism https://www.instagram.com/p/CBDrpV0hOSe/?igshid=n5wvh3lcwpzc
Today's #BCCSpotlight is a "cultural worker, educator, writer, organizer" and creator of the social/political comic "(H)afrocentric", Juliana "Jewels" Smith @hafrocentric . Based in the West Coast Smith creatively uses her voice to discuss such topics as racial and gender equality/justice, current politics laced with humor through her comic. Being able to create a space within comics that represents women of color voices and speak to the current day issues is is much needed. Smith definitely embodies what it means to provide a visual, literary entertaining medium. Nothing like offering a visual critique! #ArtAsActivism #SharingIsCaring #RepresentationMatters
