Prompt - Hey can you do a one shot for the wanted where Nathan has been getting hate and he acts out during an interview because the interviewer is rude and the boys talk to him? And he confesses about the hate? Take your time
------
When Nathan was diagnosed with ADHD, he hardly thought of it as a big deal. It wasn’t like it would change his life, right? That’s what his mum had promised him. His family had reassured him that he was still their boy and nothing had changed. Except that they were completely wrong! It did change his life. Or perhaps when he got in the band, he interacted with more people than his family or close friend group, and they were not always so nice to him when they learnt about his ADHD.
------
When The Wanted boys learnt about Nathan’s ADHD, they had all started to be a little too overprotective with Nathan. In fact, it had gotten Nathan so frustrated that he snapped at the boy.
“I’m not sick! Please stop treating me like this” Nathan shouted.
“We didn’t mean it like this Nath” Jay tried to explain.
“I appreciate your help but don’t…” Nathan trailed off, actually tearing up.
“Hey” Siva sighed, squeezing Nathan’s shoulder.
“We’re worried for you buddy. So maybe we went a bit overboard” Max said.
“Listen here kiddo, we’ll probably go overboard sometimes but we all mean good. From the day you joined in, you were our responsibility but now it’s gotten a bit more serious. But not in the wrong way okay? You’re our little brother. We’re allowed to fuss over you” Tom explained to the boy.
Nathan sighed. He couldn’t really fight the boys on this.
------
Nathan never believed his ADHD to be a hindrance in his life. He took his meds regularly and if ever he missed it, then the boys always carried a spare for him. His ADHD sometimes made him moody, jittery or hyperactive. And after taking the meds, it made him lethargic or emotional. There was always some kind of side effects. If he didn’t take his medications, then his ADHD troubled him and if he took the meds, then the side effects bothered him. It became the reason why Nathan was sometimes misunderstood. And from this misunderstanding, he also received quite an amount of hate from ‘fans’, ‘rival fans’ and from other people too.
------
But the boys remained unaware of the hate that Nathan was receiving until they went to an interview. From the first minute of the interview itself, they noticed that the interviewer was not too fond of Nathan. Throughout the interview, Nathan had been fidgeting a lot. He had forgotten to take his medicines and it was making him a bit jittery. And interviewer wasn’t taking it too kindly.
“Can you please sit still? Do you need the bathroom or what?” the interviewer whisper-yelled at the boy.
When Max raised an eyebrow at the guy, he forced a smile as he whispered to Nathan, “we’ll soon go in break, then you can go to the bathroom.”
As soon as they cut to the commercials, Max handed Nathan a pill, knowing very well that it was his ADHD acting up. Nathan sighed as he took the meds, bracing himself for the side effects.
------
But the boys didn’t think much of the interviewer’s distaste for Nathan until the man started asking a few questions that were not only rude but quite hurtful too.
“Nathan, recently there has been a lot of news about you snapping at fans or being too lethargic or uninterested at gigs and concerts. What would you say about that?” the interviewer asked.
“He isn’t doing that on purpose. It’s just his ADHD messing with him sometimes” Jay explained, instead of Nathan.
“Oh you have ADHD?” the man asked, an obvious disgust in his tone.
And that’s when Nathan snapped.
“So what huh? So what if have ADHD? It’s not a disease that would spread if you talk to me! I’m done with this hate towards me because of my ADHD. I get it that I’m a bit different from you guys but it’s not that hard to understand. It’s just that my emotions go out of control sometimes or I get it fidgety and can’t hold focus for a long time. I’m not being lazy. I’m not being a rude star who let fame get to him. It’s just my ADHD” Nathan shouted, voice cracking in the end as a tear rolled down his tears.
His bandmates were left gaping at the boy as Nathan stormed out.
------
They had all shouted at the interviewer and refused to ever do an interview with them. They followed Nathan out and managed to catch up with him in the car. They all sighed when they saw the boy crying his heart out in the car.
“Side effects of the meds?” Jay asked.
“They all hate me” Nathan sobbed.
“That and also the hate. Something that the kid forgot to tell us” Max sighed.
“The fans hate me because of my ADHD” Nathan hiccupped.
“Nath, you know this buddy. The ones who hate aren’t real fans” Siva said, tucking the kid in his side.
“Siva’s right kiddo. The ones who know you will accept you with and without the ADHD. They are the ones who love you and they are the ones who should matter to you” Tom said.
“Like you guys?” Nathan asked.
“Absolutely kiddo” Tom smiled, pulling Nathan in a hug and the others joined in the hug too, earning a smile from Nathan.
------
Somehow the fans had gotten clips of the interview despite it not being telecasted and by the next day, it was trending all over twitter. A lot of their fans had come forward to support Nathan. A lot of their fans had been very supportive of Nathan’s ADHD. And Nathan, he got on with his day, knowing that he needs to focus on the love and support rather than on the hate. His bandmates were there to remind him of that every day.
