~~ National ADAPT protesters. ~~ ADAPT has protested in over 10 different cities. ♡ These protesters were educated, planned ahead of time, and knew arrest was a risk. Some are attorneys themselves. ♡ ¤ They don't need pity or outrage. ☆ They need action. ☆ • Calling, writing, faxing, emailing, tweeting, and visiting your senators. • Educating others on the importance of this bill's affects on poor and disabled Americans. • Educating yourself on why disabled people are engaging in all forms of activism as much as we can. • Write a letter to the editor of multiple newspapers. These can make their way into senators' offices. • See if you can get your local news on board ☆ What is the biggest reason many disabled people are protesting? ☆ ~ Because the bill will result in giant cuts to HCBS - home and community based services. A loss of freedom, independence, QOL, and ability to stay in the community, and for some - continue working. ~ When HCBS are cut, those who rely on them will be forced into institutions, like nursing homes. Or left to struggle and perhaps die. ☆ What else? ☆ • Cuts in prescription coverage • States could eliminate coverage of psychiatric hospitals • Cuts to disability aids, resources, accommodations, and services. • Cuts to disability related education services in K-12 • Cuts and caps on all states and their Medicaid based services. • Allowing states to eliminate basic health service coverage, including maternity services • The loss of healthcare of over 20 million Americans
We also believe – like Dr. Roberts – that we have been passed the baton. The Supreme Court in its Olmstead Decision affirmed that people with disabilities have the right to live and receive services in the most integrated setting. Sadly across the country – and here in Arkansas – that isn’t the reality for many people with disabilities who either are forced into institutions or go without needed services and supports to lead an integrated life. ADAPT is here in Little Rock to fight for those who have not been given the opportunity to fight for themselves. We will honor the Little Rock Nine and all of those who have struggled before us as we fight for freedom, equality, and justice. And we urge others to join the struggle and, in the words of Gloria Ray Karlmark, "Dare to object to prejudice and injustice."

HUD HEADQUARTERS LOCKED DOWN BY ACTIVISTS DEMANDING HOUSING
Date Mailed: Monday, April 22nd 2013 08:53 AM
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Daniese McMullin-Powell, 302-507-7546 Adam Ballard, 708-945-3893 Janine Bertram, 503-915-5247 or [email protected] HUD HEADQUARTERS LOCKED DOWN BY ACTIVISTS DEMANDING HOUSING FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES ADAPT Urges Obama Administration to Keep Its Promises on Community Living for People with Disabilities Washington, DC -- ADAPT, the national disability rights group, has hundreds of activists barricaded at the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) right now. They are demanding that HUD do more to open housing for people with disabilities trying to move out of nursing facilities and institutions. "It's a complete scandal that thousands and thousands of people with disabilities are waiting to get out of institutional settings, and HUD is moving at only a glacial pace to address this need," said Bruce Darling of Rochester ADAPT. "Everyone thinks the housing crisis in America is only about foreclosures. While that is huge, there is another housing crisis that is going vastly unaddressed." Several class action lawsuits across the country have resulted in court agreements for states to move people living in nursing homes and institutions into the community. The difficulty is that most of these class members have little to no income and therefore need subsidized as well as accessible housing. "We are here today because HUD has told us that they promised to issue agency-wide policy on this problem," said Daniese McMullin-Powell of Delaware ADAPT. "I was there when they made this promise to us in January. They even showed us a draft. Why hasn't it been issued? Is HUD backpedaling on progress?"
