For Madeline Sayet, passion for classic theater has meant worrying about being a traitor to her roots. “Am I allowed to love Shakespeare and be Mohegan?” the director and playwright says she’s wondered, weighing her Native American heritage against troubling, centuries-old phenomena like the Bard’s place of honor in a racist, colonizing system, and the valuing of his language above Indigenous tongues.
