SINO-KOREAN VS. PURE KOREAN WORDS
What Is Sino-Korean & What Is Pure-Korean?
Sino-Korean words are words that were previously in the Chinese language that were borrowed and are still used today in the Korean language.
Pure-Korean or Native-Korean words aren't taken from anywhere. They are simply made from the Korean language.
What's The Difference?
A sino-korean word has a more formal feeling to it. These words you would use or hear in formal situations. For example, you'll see some sino-korean words used when taking tests in Korean, like the Topik exam. Another example is if you were giving a speech in Korean, you might hear more Sino-Korean words instead of Pure-Korean ones.
As for pure/native-korean words, they have a more casual feel to them and Koreans use them very often. You'll most likely hear them in everyday situations. They are both important to know. Don't just learn one over the other, because they are both so intertwined into the Korean language. So much so that sometimes it's better to use a sino korean word over a pure korean word.
How Do I Know Which One is Which?
If you use Naver Dictionary (which i feel everyone should) then there is an easy way to tell.
If you see hanja written next to the word when you look it up in the dictionary, that means that it is indeed a sino-korean word. Hanja is a Chinese Character that reflects the Korean word & it's pronounciation.
When Do I Use Them?!😦
Don't stress about trying to remember which one is formal and informal or trying to adjust them to fit into a formal or informal situation. You can use pure-korean words and still make formal sentences. You can use sino-korean words and still make informal sentences. However, it's good to know the difference between the two.
There are plenty of Sino-Korean words that are much more common and natural to use than Pure-Korean words. For example, 친구 meaning "Friend" & happens to be a Sino-Korean word. 벗 & 동무 is the Native-korean word meaning "Friend" as well. But have you ever even heard of those🤔 So once again don't stress about the difference, this post is mainly for people wondering why there's more than one word meaning the same thing.
To be fair, I only just learned about this myself. I was on youtube and noticed a video from GoBilly and I watched it. I hope i presented the Info as well as he did. If not you can search for the video on youtube for another explanation. I knew about Sino & Native numbers but for some reason It didn't register that Sino & Native words existed as well🤣 Oh well you live and you learn.
I'm not fluent, I'm not an expert. I just do my best and that's all I can do😉
The most common ones we've all seen would have to be these three :
(Left = Pure/Native | Right = Sino)
해/태양
고르다/선택하다
쓰다/사용하다
for me sino korean vs native korean numbers really mess me up so i found two little games you can play to help study and memorize! I’ve been playing these going up to 100 on each just while watching tv as a nice review and its helped a lot
they both offer different ranges so you can just study 1-10 and get the basics down or focus on the pesky native korean 20-90
theres an app for them on android (but it costs money and you can just use the free website version on your phones browser so...)

In Korean there are two number systems: Native Korean numbers are numbers that are only used in the Korean language and aren’t adaptions of other languages’ numbers Sino Korean numbers are just that, they are adapted from Chinese numbers (yi, er, san, si..).
The two systems are used for different things. Native: Counting people and objects, age (informal, but not banmal), counting in general, telling hours. Sino: Doing maths, regarding money, age (more formal), telling time other than hours, name of the months, measurements including temperature, phone numbers.
We’ll get more into telling time, how to count things (with measure words), age and months in later posts.
Native Korean numbers: 하나 = one 둘 = two 셋 = three 넷 = four 다섯 = five 여섯 = six 일곱 = seven 여덟 = eight 아홉 = nine 열 = ten
Sino Korean numbers: 일 = one 이 = two 삼 = three 사 = four 오 = five 육 = six 칠 = seven 팔 = eight 구 = nine 십 = ten

Native quiz Sino quiz
There are native Korean numbers above 99 But they are so uncommon we don’t wanna confuse you with them (if you are curious you can ask though). The numbers used above 99 are usually the sino Korean numbers and they are: 백 (100), 천 (1,000), 만 (10,000), 억 (100 million) and so on, and yes numbers this high occur if not often then at least sometimes.
Native numbers: 10 = 열 20 = 스물 30 = 서른 40 = 마흔 50 = 쉰 60 = 예순 70 = 이른 80 = 여든 90 = 아흔
Sino Korean numbers: 10 = 십 20 = 이십 30 = 삼십 40 = 사십 50 = 오십 60 = 육십 70 = 칠십 80 = 팔십 90 = 구십 100 = 백

Korean Native Surnames/Names
Read some from naver and reddit Reddit (full of Chinese vs Korean pride fights, so tiresome lol) Think they are quite fascinating since we don’t know much back before Koreans adopt Chinese cultures. ==================== Unrelated:
I don’t think there is any shame for cultures to adopt things from another culture. We thrive from constant interactions. Also, the so call ” original culture” is not superior or own all things they “invented”. Hell, English has so many Latin loan words and other vocabs adopted from other language but doesn’t mean it is Latin or French. Everyone starts small. There is no need to fight for the title “origin”. If someone is doing that, let them be coz what matter is how you better the “culture” you have.
Anneyonghasseyo! When did you start learning Korean? I just started about 3 months ago, and wasn't strict with it, so I kinda gave up mid-way. BUT, I started again, and I can still remember the sino-korean numbers and the normal korean numbers (what are they called?). I mean I memorize them by heart, but when I need just one of them, let's say fro example "3" I have to go through "il" "i" to know it's "sam", ottokae? I'm more of a beginner, and i figured a more intermediate would help, please?:)
Hello~
How long is in my FAQ.
Normal native Korean numbers.
Honestly, it’s just practice, even now sometimes I have to stop and think.
Some ways to practice are to always write out the numbers in full when writing anything (as opposed to the roman numeral), secondly, if you’re working off a textbook/worksheet write the full number above any roman numerals (this also helps you remember which number system is used with each counter.)
Also, I would only bother to remember up to 30 in native Korean as even native speakers have told me that they actually can’t remember 50, 60 etc in native Korean and just use Sino-Korean (even if you’re suppose to use native e.g talking about someones age).
I hope your study goes well this time~
