Lee Francis 4 is the owner and CEO of Native Realities. The Albuquerque-based company behind the Indigenous Comic Con (Indigi Pop X), opened their store front on June 3rd, 2017. Now Native Realities publishes the incredible tales of Indigenous Icons and Native American superheroes whose stories have long been coopted, unheard or ignored. They strive to give you the most original and authentic representations of Native and Indigenous peoples through stories and texts that educate and entertain children, youth and adults.

In comics and graphic novels, Native American characters aren't usually very prominent. They're often sidekicks — or worse. But a new publisher focused exclusively on Native writers and artists is changing that. Called Native Realities, the company just released the reboot of the first all-Native superhero comic.

Reporter Megan Kamerick talked to the publisher and some of the creators involved with Native Realities -- check out her story here.

So I'm currently kinda furious. Because I just found out, that the entirety of my people's religion is considered a cult because some fucks in 1933 decided that indigenous practices were fucking cults. Seriously, I looked it up because I'm interested in cults and cult mentality, and the only real reason they could come up with for being a quote-unquote "cult" was the use of medicine men, religious dances, and the fact men would perform special dances away from women. THAT'S IT! That is the only reason they could come up with for it being a cult. Thankfully, people assigned realize that the bullshit reason, but if you look up the name of my people's religion it's still classified as a cult. Literally so much so Google will put cult after its name when you Google it.

I may not, sadly, be that connected to my people's religion but I am so furious at this moment.

Let me tell you about this comic, because you will never identify with a story more. Jonesy is a sheep that has just graduated and is ready to move on with his life, so he shaves of his wool, and goes to sell it. No one will buy, so he's sick casting around the only thing that has value to him, but no one else wants. The metaphor works on so many levels. ... so good. ... I can't wait to see the next comic.
