For anyone interested in learning more about the Mandan people I recommend this book "Encounters at the Heart of the World" by Elizabeth A. Fenn. The two Mandan subjects in my painting are Charging Eagle/Bad Gun on the left and Red Buffalo aka. Red Roan Cow or Red Cow on the right, first and second chiefs of the Mandans around 1870.
