“The use of social media as social support in natural disasters”
Written by: Fatma Al-hadabi
The social media has contributed to achieving the social solidarity among societies during the natural disasters which reveals a big cohesion among people. It has saved many people's lives during natural disasters through e-mail, Twitter and other social platforms. Here lies the role of media in confronting crises and its ability to be a real help for people and the government and to be the eye of the society that conveys what it sees with honesty, objectivity and responsibility. So, a country without social media may be more vulnerable.
For example, Kashmir was exposed by floods that led to the collapse of the infrastructure, network and communication facilities and the Government was unable to identify the location of the people in that area. The problem was solved by using the SOS feature in Twitter which provided ground data that identified their location where more than 12,000 people were rescued.
humanitarian response is one thing that the media has provided. It gives an opportunity for solidarity and the preservation of the unity of society through their relief efforts and the dissemination of messages in platforms.
During the exposure of Salalah to Cyclone Mkono spread in the media icon( # all of us Oman) that reflects the cohesion of all Omanis and residents in the province in the face the cyclone. This slogan carries an important national meaning and Omanis has expressed their unity through the provided assistance to the citizens affected by the cyclone. Where many pictures of volunteer work which gained social ties strength among individuals.
From all, the media in the news of disasters and crises is a real test of measuring social support in communities because it has made citizens a partner in thinking, action and practice and contribute to the solution of social problems.
