Do people of different ethnicities smell different?
Yes. Skin pigment is caused by melanin, which in high concentrations also causes the skin to be very dry. When the moisture level of the skin is different, different bacteria can survive there, causing a different smell. In addition to this, there are also different chemicals produced on the skin by certain races. There is also a gene which changes the intensity of the smell. So, from personal experience, while you'll notice that only African people have a DIFFERENT smell then other races (if you exclude things like perfume, curry, etc.), that there is also a differences in INTENSITY of smell between different people, and which has trends in races while in some cases covering nearly the entire race.
The different intensity is caused by a particular gene, which also, independently, causes two different types of earwax in people. There are two potential copies of this gene, and if you have no copies of it, like almost all Koreans, then you will not have armpit smell at all. While the amount of sweat glands in the armpits is not the thing which changes this, the gene causes either “apocrine” or “endocrine” glands. Endocrine glands are normally found in other places like your palms, head, etc. People with 0 copies of this gene have no apocrine glands and therefore produce none of the type of sweat which causes armpit smell. People with one copy have an average level and people with 2 copies have the highest intensity of the smell.
And yes this is related to races and populations as some races have nearly an entire population with 2 copies and some races have a large number with 2 copies, some it varies across the population and some have nearly the entire race or population with 0 copies. However, these aprocrine glands are not the most important thing which causes it, since this only changes the intensity and not the smell itself. The smell itself is changed by the composition of the skin — which changes due to the amount of melanin — and the different chemicals that are excreted in the sweat, on the body, or building up on the skin as well. And then further is the diet habits of a population or in the case of Indians their perfuming of the armpits, but for my comment I am referring to how it smells before any differences in diet or habits are present.
