NY Times: Nazi Sympathizers
While I strive to separate my art from the political world, there are some things that must be addressed across all platforms, and quite frankly, I don't have any interest in sharing or selling my art with Nazis/White Nationalists or those who sympathize with them.
If you missed it, the #nytimes did a bit of a fluff piece on a Nazi who lives in Ohio. You can read that here... https://t.co/rWYBk1fAVT?amp=1
In response, or rather, more as a cathartic act, I wrote the following...
It was a cool autumn day in the quiet town of Reichsville, Sam was out shopping for a new swastika armband, as he had lost his in the battle with the antifa while trying to defend a statue of the great white hope. The Antifa had ruined his day before, and surely would again.
After purchasing his armband, Sam headed down to meet with Chris and Tim, members of his local white nationalist chapter. It was the weekend, and on weekends they rake up all the brown leaves to either burn or dump outside of their quaint little town. All three gentlemen would melt any grandmother's heart.
After the chores were done they attend a community meeting where they discuss how best to safely keep anyone of not pure white blood from infiltrating their town, and how best they could stop antifa from ever ruining one of their gatherings again.
Famished from the days work, they break for lunch. A simple meal for simple men. White bread, bologna, and grand old American cheese. They continue to discuss what to do about the antifa menace as they eat and sip on their Cokes in the waning afternoon light.
A quick drive around the outskirts of their town, they check that all the "whites only" signs are posted and not defaced, replacing any that a vandal terrorist may have destroyed. Then they all return home, Sam to his 3 bedroom ranch, adorably decorated by his wife Bernice where she stands waiting on the porch with his two well groomed and polite children, Sally and Sammy Jr. Dinner is ready, a roasted chicken with corn-on-the-cob, and mashed potatoes. The lights go out for bed, but Sam still worries what to do about the antifa.
Well dang, I thought the poster I redesigned was part of a series it looked like from the US Office of War Info depicting Germans, but I was an idiot and it was a British design depicting British soldiers. Fuck me, right? So hey, if you like that design, here's a fixed version. The revised helmets make it super clear, and won't catch flack from folks who know their history (and helmet design!)
It’s simple and fun, and sometimes that’s all I really need
I’ve been trying to think up a clever way to start this post but...uh...Himouto-Umaru-chan! Yes, the critically acclaimed anime that’s taking the world by storm is what I’m talking about, and I’d like to say that I’m enjoying it very much. Okay, maybe it’s not critically acclaimed and taking the world by storm. I still like it though, and that’s perfectly fine. I mean, liking things is better than hating things. Unless you like Nazis...which is bad. Anyway, I appreciate this show in the sense that it doesn’t take itself seriously, that it can just have fun and introduce fun characters and everyone can just have fun (except for Umaru’s older brother and everyone else she fucks with by being so perfect at everything).
FUN! You know what else I find fun? Good product placement! Yes, I’m a sucker for good product placement, and as long as you’re not offensively trying to sell me something, I may just want to buy it. I really want the pajama cape hamster thing Umaru wears. I really do. It’s cute and I may just pay money for it. I also like when shows uses references I understand. Video games and anime and stuff. I like meta things, it makes me feel smarter, don’t take this away from me.
The character are cute and I can’t find a reason to dislike any of them. I see why people may find Umaru annoying, but that’s the point! She’s an antihero, and a darn cute one at that! I don’t know about you, but I find her pretty relate-able. She’s pretty, smart, popular, and wins at everything, just like me! She also is selfish, scheme-y, and bratty, also like me. Ebina is cute and shy, Sylphyn is cute, competitive and has a cool name, and Kirie is cute and misunderstood.
It’s cute and fun, and in a world were “the man” is constantly trying to keep me down, it;s good to have something that can put a smile on my face. Gaming references and cute girls and wacky hi-jinks and cute girls and a catchy OP and cute girls and a catchy ED and cute girls and a hamster cape I want to buy. I really am enjoying this show and maybe you should too. Oh, and did I mention cute girls?
