garden update || 10/04/2024
spent the day burying irrigation tubing and installing sprinklers in my perennial beds to help them feel better in their new home
I'm eventually planning on building another set of deck steps in the center so it can be a nice little area surrounded by beautiful native flowering plants.
I've always thought of replacing the grass in this rectangular area with something else but after a year of debating I'm still not totally sure what. my lawn is bahiagrass which is annoying as hell because it's rhizomatous so it spreads like crazy (into my beds and paths), and has extremely tall seedheads so it's annoying to walk in when tall. Plus, it's vigorous and good at choking out other plants, which is another reason why I haven't done anything until now.
I know some people are really passionate and more well-read about lawn replacement than I am, I'm receptive to any advice or suggestions! Any replacement would have to be able to take plenty of foot/wheelbarrow traffic though. I've also thought about just swapping the kind of turfgrass to something more impressive-looking and less mower-intensive, but at what point is it more hassle than it's worth to turn grass into grass, y'know?
anyways, I'm really happy with how my native flowerbeds are getting along after 2 weeks in-ground. there's only one plant who doesn't look too good right now and unfortunately it's one of my eastern columbines which are just so adorable- i hope they're okay!
