“... To the senior who left a beautiful memory for me during middle school times, I want to bravely call ‘sunbae-nim’ once!” Jaehyun read, his heart warming at the sweet letter. As his eyes trailed on, ready to read the rest, his heart stopped. “Oh,” he gasped, letting out a series of nervous and shy laughs.
Johnny, confused by his sudden reaction, read on as well. He began to laugh, clapping his hands in complete and utter surprise “Wow,” he exclaimed, a grin playing his lips. Jaehyun leaned forward, his face warming up as he held the script in front of him tightly, small, breathy chuckles still tumbling from his mouth.
Taking a breath, Jaehyun attempted to compose himself, failing in the end as he read out the next line.
“Shindong Middle School, Jung Jaehyun sunbae-nim, I liked you,” his voice shook as he spoke, his smile growing by the second. Jaehyun tried to ignore the slightly smug grin his friend wore, trying to keep his fluttering heart under wraps. “Amazing,” he breathed, his heart racing.
Shying away from the microphone for but a second, Jaehyun went on. His eyes scanned the name written on the script.
[Y/N].
The name brought back memories, though they were blurry, he could remember meeting [Y/N] and bumping into her in the hallway. Before he could get too nostalgic, he looked up. “[Y/N]? Where’s [Y/N] hoobae?” Both Johnny and Jaehyun glanced around the room, wondering which door she would come in through.
Jaehyun felt as though he were the lead in a drama, meeting someone after many years. When the far door opened, he swallowed nervously. A woman walked in, and despite having matured and sporting a different hairstyle, he could recognize her as the one and only [Y/N].
“Hello,” she said nervously, covering her mouth as she grinned. Smiling like a fool, he replied informally, “hello.”
Jaehyun nearly fell out of his chair when Johhny requested her to repeat a line from her letter. Chuckling to herself, [Y/N] leaned toward the microphone the staff had lent her. “Woah, daebak!” Jaehyun bowed his head, hiding his smile. [Y/N]’s exclamation was adorable to him. Everything felt so surreal, not that he minded.
The recording went on well, with both MCs smiling in adoration toward [Y/N] almost the whole time, still processing the entire situation. When [Y/N] was ushered out, Jaehyun almost felt disappointed, but hid the emotion with a smile.
“You did well today,” Jaehyun bowed toward the staff as he and Johnny shuffled away from the table. It was past midnight now, and it was time for the two to go back to the dorms and rest. “It’s raining,” Johnny mumbled, thanking a staff member who handed him his jacket (which he had forgotten in the recording room).
“Isn’t that [Y/N]?” Johhny nudged Jaehyun as they walked out of the building, their manager following closely behind. Jaehyun followed Johnny’s gaze. To his surprise, [Y/N] stood under the building’s stretched out ledge of a roof, huddling close to the wall as she typed away at her phone.
“[Y/N],” he called out. She jumped, nearly dropping her phone in surprise. She looked over her shoulder at the small group with wide eyes. Turning on her heel, she quickly lowered her head in a bow. “Hello,” she stuttered, obviously cold from the rain.
“What’re you doing out here?” he asked, frowning at her damp form. [Y/N] gave him a small, yet nervous smile, scratching the back of her neck. Holding up her phone, she shrugged. “My dad said he’d pick me up, but he’s not answering.”
Jaehyun looked over his shoulder at Johnny, who was already in the company’s van, who stared back through the window. He wore a teasing grin, wiggling his eyebrows at him. Clearing his throat, Jaehyun smiled down at her. “Where do you live?”
[Y/N] sighed with a frown, “all the way in Busan.”
Jaehyun’s eyes widened, “that’s over two hours away!” he exclaimed, surprised. [Y/N] avoided eye contact, tapping her thigh nervously. The fact that she was standing next to the Jung Jaehyun, member of rookie group NCT, her own former crush from years back, was suddenly catching up to her.
“I’ll call a taxi--” Jaehyun quickly interrupted her, raising a brow. “That’ll cost over $500 to drive from here to Busan. That’s quite expensive for a high school student,” upon seeing the side eye [Y/N] gave him, Jaehyun raised his hands in defense. “It’s true, sorry.”
Jaehyun bit his lip, glancing back at the van, where he could see his manager looking impatient. “Come with me,” he said spontaneously. “You can call your dad in the morning but for now, you can come stay at the dorms.”
[Y/N] looked at Jaehyun with wide eyes, quickly shaking her head. “I can’t stay there-- if anyone saw me entering the dorms NCT might have a scandal and--”
“Hey,” Jaehyun rested a hand on her shoulder, “relax. It’s fine. It’s not like fans know where the dorms are.” Upon seeing his gentle expression, [Y/N] relented and finally agreed to go with him. Glancing over at her shoulder, she frowned at his agitated looking manager.
“Will he be okay with it?” she asked, gesturing toward him. Jaehyun chuckled with a shrug. His indifferent answer made [Y/N] feel unsure, but knowing Jaehyun (not that she really did), she wouldn’t have a choice. Besides, the rain was coming down harder than it had been mere minutes ago, and by the looks of it the weather wouldn’t improve anytime soon.
And, in the end, Jaehyun was right. She didn’t have enough money on her call a taxi nor did she feel comfortable spending more than half of it on a hotel. She, after all, had to save up for school books and supplies.
“Okay.”
Convincing the boys’ manager didn’t take long; all Jaehyun had to do was say that if [Y/N] couldn’t go with them, he’d stay out in the rain with her. The manager had to agree; he couldn’t have Jaehyun get sick with their current schedule.
The ride was quiet for the most part; Johnny and Jaehyun were tired from filming and no doubt their manager wanted to just go home. [Y/N], however, didn’t feel tired at all. In actuality, she felt giddy, as if she had just gone on a sugar rush.
She was in a car with Jung Jaehyun and Johnny Seo and was on her way to stay at their dorms.
So many fans would kill to be me right now, she thought with a small smile, I should thank them. Somehow.
“We’re here,” the manager announced, waking Johnny up from his small nap. “Good night,” the boys’ bid their manager goodbye as they jumped out of the vehicle. Bowing politely, [Y/N] averted her eyes when the man gave her a tired look.
As the van drove away, Johnny and Jaehyun led [Y/N] to the doorstep. Everything was quiet, excluding the chirping of crickets and the buzz of the night. Jaehyun gave [Y/N] a small smile as he opened the door.
[Y/N] was not at all surprised about the cleanliness of the dorms, knowing the members (specifically Taeyong) well enough to know that they were clean people. She was, however, surprised to see the two youngest members of 127 sitting on the living room couch, watching a horror movie.
“You’re home--” Mark stopped short after seeing [Y/N] removing her shoes behind the two, who towered over her with their height. Donghyuck turned around to see what he was so shocked over, and let out a small, high pitched noise after seeing a stranger in their doorway.
“Relax Mickey Mouse,” Johnny paused, looking proud about his lame joke, “she’s safe.” After the initial shock wore over, Donghyuck gave Johnny a look, “really?”
[Y/N] laughed at the interaction, always having found Donghyuck adorable. “This is [Y/N],” Jaehyun introduced, pushing her forward gently. “She couldn’t make it home, so she’s staying here for the night. Mark smiled at her, pausing the movie momentarily.
“It’s nice to meet you noona,” he piped, his really cute smile growing. [Y/N] flushed. Despite being older than most of her peers, no one had ever called her that. “I’m the same age as Donghyuck,” she mumbled with the wave of her hand, “you don’t need to call me noona.”
“I’m going to bed,” Johnny cut in, a tired expression on his face. “‘Night.”
“Goodnight,” the four chorused. Jaehyun tapped [Y/N]’s shoulder, pointing toward his room. “I’m going to go get you some clothes to wear. You can stay and hang with the children, okay?”
“We aren’t children!”
You laughed again, this time covering your mouth with a nod. He bounded off, disappearing behind his bedroom door. “Want to watch with us?” Donghyuck asked, the pink tint in his cheeks slowly turning back to his own beautiful skintone.
Nodding, [Y/N] made her way around the couch and sat on the other side of Mark. He pressed play, and the low hum of the TV filled the room. She winced as the main character became oblivious to the man stalking her.
The movie’s soundtrack got louder, the cliche violin music making her feel tense. She saw the boys lean toward each other beside her, both wearing scared expressions. If she wasn’t scared herself, she would’ve laughed.
The three heard the floorboard creaking, but ignored it, thinking it was coming from the TV. The stalker crept closer to the main character.
“Boo!”
[Y/N] let out a scream, which in turn made Donghyuck and Mark scream. Behind them, Jaehyun laughed hard, clutching his stomach at their reaction. “What’s happening?” an alert Taeyong asked, looking around cautiously as he walked out of his shared room, Yuta and Doyoung following behind.
Johnny peaked his head out of his door, as did Ten and Taeil, looking both tired and annoyed. “Jaehyun,” he whined, despite his low voice, upon seeing his friend laughing, “I just fell asleep man.”
Jaehyun didn’t look sorry, wiping imaginary tears from his eyes. “The boys rolled their eyes, seemingly not surprised. Sicheng trudged out of another room, rubbing his eyes tiredly. “What’s going on?” he slurred.
[Y/N] had to refrain herself from cooing at him.
“Jaehyun scared Donghyuck, Mark, and a girl--” Yuta cut himself off, making a double take. “Who--?”
Jaehyun chuckled at his comical reaction, patting [Y/N]’s head affectionately. “This is [Y/N]. She’s staying over for the night.” Turning to face her, he held out a few articles of clothing. “Here.”
[Y/N] thanked him, trying her best to calm down. Being scared by Jaehyun coupled with the sudden entrance of the rest of the older members; a fan was bound to be buzzed. “Where can I change?”
After Jaehyun showed her the bathroom, he was met with the confused gaze of the members. “I’ll explain later,” he shrugged, a small smile on his face. Johnny chuckled, “where is she sleeping?”
Jaehyun hummed, pointing at him. “She can sleep on your bed. The couch is comfortable, right?” Johnny’s jaw dropped at his sudden decision, but suddenly decided against arguing. Bounding over to the couch, he motioned for Donghyuck and Mark to lean in.
The sound of the bathroom door opening gained the attention of all ten members. The sight of a girl in his own clothing made Jaehyun blush, but he quickly looked away before he could be too obvious. Mark noticed and chuckled at his reaction.
“Everyone go to bed, it’s one in the morning,” Taeyong mumbled, retreated back to his room. Soon, every member had gone back into their shared rooms; Johnny hanging with the younger members as they continued the movie.
Jaehyun showed you the room he shared with Sicheng and Johnny. “You’ll sleep there,” he pointed to an empty bed. [Y/N] watched as Sicheng flopped back onto his own bed, his half-lidded eyes watching you in curiosity. “How come you’re staying here?” he asked bluntly. Jaehyun explained for her briefly, Sicheng nodded in understanding.
“How have you been?” Jaehyun whispered as Sicheng began to doze off, his head falling onto his pillow as his eyes fluttered closed. “Good,” [Y/N] answered, fidgeting with the hem of her shirt as she sat on the bed. “You?”
Jaehyun smiled, resting his chin on his arms as he lied down. “Okay; schedules can be tiring, but it’s worth it.” She nodded, not being able to relate. “So you moved? You said you lived in Busan now.”
[Y/N] nodded, a sigh escaping her lips. “After I turned fifteen, my family couldn’t afford our house anymore, and my dad found a cheaper one in Busan, so...” she trailed off, falling back onto the bed.
Jaehyun frowned, but she waved her hand dismissively. “It’s fine, Jaehyun. I got a job too, so I’m helping pay for the house. Things are alright now.” He could sense the lie in her tone, but chose to ignore it.
“So, you liked me?”
“Jung Jaehyun!”
Hours later, the two continued to catch up with one another, despite not being so close back then. Sicheng miraculously stayed asleep the entire time, his soft, quiet snores filling the empty silence in between their words. Outside, in the living room, Mark, Donghyuck, and Johnny were still awake. The movie they were watching was long over, but they could hear the two talking.
How Sicheng stayed asleep, they couldn’t say.
“Do they realize how loud they are talking,” Donghyuck mumbled into his pillowed. “I don’t know; it’s cute,” Mark commented. “I bet twenty that they’ll be together in a month.”
Johnny scoffed, “a month? Jaehyun’s a wimp,” Donghyuck and Mark laughed, “it’ll take him at least three months.”
Donghyuck sat up, “well I bet they’ll be together in five months.” The three looked at each other, narrowing their eyes.
“Let’s see then.”
To [Y/N]’s utmost surprise, Jaehyun had asked for her number the day after they met again. “It’ll be nice to escape from the idol laugh sometimes, you know?” he had said.
True to his words, whenever he would feel stressed, he’d call her up and they’d just talk for hours; or at least until his next schedule. It had even gotten to the point where he would just text her throughout the day. She had never in her life expected to become friends with an idol, but it happened.
Months later, much to Mark’s dismay, passed before Jaehyun went up to Johnny.
“What do I do?” he began, running a hand through his hair. Johnny raised a brow at him, looking at the distressed male over his phone. “What are you talking about, Jaehyun?”
“[Y/N]!” he exclaimed, face red. “She keeps doing things and I don’t know how I feel about it.” Turning his phone down, his gestured for Jaehyun to sit down. “Calm down and explain.”
“We’ve been hanging out recently--”
“I know.”
“-- and in the past month I’ve been noticing things about her that I didn’t before, like how she tucks her hair behind her ear when she’s concentrating or how she always taps her leg whenever she’s nervous. And I can’t stand how adorable she looks whenever she laughs--”
Johnny chuckled, interrupting him. “Jaehyun,” he began. “Do you like [Y/N]?”
[Y/N] hummed as she waited for Jaehyun, both earphones in. Jaehyun had called her, asking to meet up. “He’s lucky I...” she trailed off, covering her mouth as she ducked her head. The moon shone quite brightly, illuminating everything around her as she sat in the park.
Over her music, she could hear someone calling her name. Pulling the earphones out, [Y/N] turned and saw Jaehyun rushing toward her. Strands of hair stuck to his face, yet he somehow managed to look perfect underneath the moonlight.
“Sorry for calling you out so late,” he panted. [Y/N] rose a brow, “did you run here?”
“That’s not important. I need to say something to you before I chicken out.” [Y/N] frowned at the seriousness in his tone, straightening her back as she gave him her full attention. “Go ahead.”
With flushed cheeks, Jaehyun began. “I’m not good at these things,” he mumbled. [Y/N] gave him a reassuring smile. “I really didn’t think I would meet you again. Honestly, back then I thought of you as just a cute underclassman I didn’t care much for, but when you walked into the recording room that day my heart kept going crazy.”
Taking in a deep breath, he continued. “But even over the past few months, whenever your around my heart goes wild and I don’t know how to stop it,” he glanced back at [Y/N]’s eyes before averting his gaze, “and I don’t think I want it to stop.”
Realization dawned on [Y/N], her eyes widening as she covered her mouth. “I like you, [Y/N]. I’ve known for over a month now, but the other day I saw you hanging out with some guy and I realized that I had to tell you before it was too late.” Jaehyun blushed, shyly moving to take [Y/N]’s hand.
[Y/N] pursed her lips, a smile moving to her lips as she bowed her head. “Come on,” Jaehyun mumbled. “At least look at me.” Taking a hand away from hers, Jaehyun tilted [Y/N]’s head up.
Biting her lip, she let out a breathy laugh. Jaehyun’s eyes on her felt so intense, but in a breathtakingly amazing way.
[Y/N]’s heart was beating rapidly, so much so she was afraid he would hear it. “I like you too, Jaehyun,” she said, her voice just above a whisper. A smile blossomed on his face as he shyly hid his face in her neck, making her laugh as his hair tickled her.
“I’m glad,” he whispered, holding her hands just a little bit tighter.
Leaning away, Jaehyun looked her in the eyes again. “Can I...?”
With a nod, [Y/N]’s eyes fluttered closed as she leaned forward. Meeting her halfway, Jaehyun’s lips met hers in a soft kiss. His warmth transferred to her, and despite the cool air she felt her skin burn as he pulled her closer to him. Her arms wrapped around his neck as his hands rested on her waist.
Whenever [Y/N] tried to pull away, Jaehyun would move in once again, kissing her repeatedly.
The moment, however, was ruined when the two heard cheering. Both recognized the voices from behind the bush, both blushing intensely. “Guys,” Jaehyun called, his voice shaking.
To no one’s surprise, three boys walked out from their hiding spots, which happened to be a bush. Mark and Johnny grumbled, handing Donghyuck his owed money. “That was so cheesy,” Donghyuck pretended to gag.
“You made a bet on us?” [Y/N] speculated, still covering her face in embarrassment of being caught kissing. Johnny rolled his eyes, “sweetheart, we’ve had this bet going on since you slept over the first time.”
Jaehyun’s eyes narrowed, “don’t call her that.”
Mark and Donghyuck hollered. “He’s already jealous!” they exclaimed together.
“Oh shut up.”
