Jung Jaehyun – to those who listen to rookie group, NCT, this name belonged to the cute, dimpled boy. But to you, it belonged to a boy you once loved, or still loved.
You two met back in middle school when you were sitting next to each other in music class and it wasn’t long until your friendship blossomed when you both found out that you liked the same artists and bands. You often had conversations about your deep passion for music and how one day it would be fun if you guys end up being artists and making songs of your own. You were inseparable all throughout middle school up until sophomore year. Everyday after school, you two would always be seen walking home together and sometimes you would even come to each other’s houses. Even though music is the main part, there were many other things that brought you two together.
After living in America for four years, Jaehyun’s family decided to move back to Korea. Though distance was between you two, you still kept in touch. You had to; you promised each other you will. At first, you would send each other sweet letters and occasionally care packages. The time difference was definitely hard to avoid but somehow, someway you two made it work. You were always updated with each other’s lives. But as time went on, your promise could no longer be kept.
Jaehyun was casted to be an artist for what was known to be one of the biggest entertainment companies in Korea called SM Entertainment. Texts got shorter and so did calls — if you were actually lucky to catch him on his free time. You also stopped sending each other mail because he got busier and there was just not enough time for him to be writing pages of letters to you like before or going to cute shops around Seoul to send to you. You were too naive to think that your friendship will last long. You both hoped for something unrealistic.
Eventually, the company’s promised debut for Jaehyun came. He became what you and him once imagined. He’s a very successful vocalist, rapper and dancer as you’ve always known him to be. You often see his group’s music videos on Youtube as they were one of the more popular ones. There’s times where you find yourself watching these videos. You feel nothing but pride for him as you see him live his dream. But you can’t help that your heart aches.
You knew no one else deserves to be an idol but Jaehyun. You’ve seen him worked so hard. After every dance lesson, he would call you panting and claiming he’s not tired when sweat is clearly evident. But he would always smile so brightly and he was always ready to tell you about what he had just learned. When he would come over he would always show off his smooth voice to you which improves every voice lesson. And you just remember staring at him in admiration. You saw passion in his eyes. Maybe that’s why you always had that crush on him in those days. Apart from being kind and sweet to you, he was also talented. You’ve never seen someone so passionate and hardworking for something.
You never really got to confess to Jaehyun because you were too scared of feelings not being mutual. You were scared to lose your best friend. So you suppressed your emotions all throughout your friendship. It wasn’t until now when you realized that Jung Jaehyun was your sweet, first love. But now it’s too late to tell him that.
