“what are you up to, lee jeno?” you asked him, walking in step with him. he was walking behind you, covering your eyes because he knew you would find a way to get a peek at your birthday surprise.
“you’ll see, don’t worry,” he softly said into your ear, pressing his lips to your shoulder. “we’re almost there.”
“almost where?” you complained, but all you got from jeno was his cute laugh as a response.
it was only after a few more minutes of walking that jeno stopped walking, taking his hands away from your eyes and putting an object on your head. “we’re here! kind of.”
“kind of?” you questioned as you opened your eyes, blinking them rapidly to adjust to the sudden change in light. when your vision finally allowed you to see, you saw two bicycles in front of you. then you looked to jeno who was sporting a helmet on his head — one that looked similar to yours. “are we cycling?”
“yes!” jeno exclaimed, taking your hand and walking you to the matching bicycles.
“this is why i’m usually in charge of the dates,” you mumbled, unenthusiastic that you had to exercise on your birthday.
“come on!” he began as he lifted one of your legs over the bike so your legs were on either side of it. “it’s not going to be hardcore, just easy breezy. and i asked yeeun if this was a good idea and she said it was cute. and you also can’t plan your own birthday event.”
“okay,” you pouted, but you giggled soon after as jeno leaned in to kiss your pout away. “but where are we going now?”
“just follow me,” he winked as he got onto his own bike, already beginning to travel ahead of you.
“wait!” you shouted, sitting on your seat and catching up to him. you hadn’t cycled in a while so you were a bit off balance for the first few minutes, but you got the hang of it.
jeno made sure to cycle slowly just for you, and with the lack of speed he was able to do tricks such as not having his hands on the handles and the like. he stopped as soon as you yelled at him to do so because you were scared he was going to fall and then you would accidentally ride over him in the frenzy.
“you shouldn’t worry about me; i cycle a lot,” he informed you with a smile as the sun began to set.
“i know,” you stated. “but it doesn’t matter how good you are, you could still fall.”
“but you would pick me up, won’t you baby?” he chuckled.
“i don’t know…not if i told you to stop and you persisted on doing so,” you teased him.
“baby!” he whined, cycling underneath some trees and onto a dirt trail.
“where are taking me now?” you asked him for the umpteenth time that day. “this is kind of weird.”
“don’t worry, we’re almost there.”
“that’s what you said last time and that was half an hour ago.”
“just chill, we’re for real almost there this time,” he informed you.
you decided to keep quiet for the remainder of the way, but jeno tried to talk to you, louder than he had during your cycling that day. you continued the conversation back and forth, you wondered why he was doing this all of a sudden. but then you heard some people hushing others, and a twinkle in the trees that didn’t look like stars suddenly disappear.
“jeno,” you began to smile, “did you throw me a surprise party?”
“what?” he scoffed, nervously beginning to stutter. “i would never throw you a surprise party—”
“you wouldn’t,” you pouted, pretending to be upset.
“besides that,” he said, completely ignoring you, “i’ve been with you all day, how could i have done that?”
“yeeun knew about the bike ride — maybe you told her so she could get the party ready?”
“you have a very creative imagination,” jeno mumbled as he came to a stop, having you stop right next to him. “we’re here!” he called out, not necessarily to you, but to the people who jumped around the open space and yelled ‘surprise!’, the fairy lights turning on after that.
“i knew it!” you laughed, getting off of your bicycle to give jeno a big hug, your bike falling to the ground.
“i told them to keep quiet around this time,” whispered into your ear.
“i don’t care,” you admitted, kissing him as the party began at your arrival. “it’s the thought that counts.”
“anyways, happy birthday,” he smiled, repeating the words he’s been saying to you all day long.
“what did you get me?”
“i literally bought us matching bicycles! what more could you want?”
