i nyeed to write a fr road trip au for mellonear it's in my blood from VML still and it's screaming 2 get out
this is how i see them honestly
taken and edited by my dear @deehlia 🖤 we had so much fun with our photoshoot last month— very much looking forward to sharing more in august 💋
engaging in the platonic equivalent of sexting (describing to each other what we would all be doing if we lived in the same city) which, instead of making me hard, makes me wistful and full of longing
postkira mello and near (colleagues, co-L's, maybe some type of friends but neither of them are sure how to define their connection these days) spontaneously get married on a wild night out in vegas and when they wake up near is like. well, this situation is somewhat awkward, but i'm sure we can get this annulled without issue. perhaps someday we will laugh about it together.
in response mello asserts that he does not believe in divorce because he's catholic. near doesn't think mello is meaningfully aligned with catholicism anymore but doesn't want to litigate the finer details of mello's strange version of faith, so he tries to point out that annulment and divorce are a bit different, and also that catholicism is generally disapproving of homosexual relationships. mello says that god would frown on annulment just as much as divorce, and also that their marriage isn't homosexual because they haven't had gay sex, an argument that completely falls apart when they finally hook up two days later. they never discuss their marriage again (and never dissolve it, either)
i actually do think diversity of interpretation is one of the greatest beauties of fandom bc i have seen so many different & unique takes on characters that still sincerely engage with and transform what we see in the source material. unfortunately occasionally an interpretation will piss me off so bad i taste blood. but we don't have to talk about that
we've had a handful of hot takes about the characterization of near deathnote lately so here's mine: if you really think there is a singular “correct” way to view or write him, you've already lost me 💔
