Magicicada septendecim spends the first 17 years of its life underground as a juvenile, feeding on the juices of plant roots - something we can all relate to. They emerge all at once after 17 years, when the soil temperature at about 20cm is above 17.9 degrees C; upon doing so they find a suitable place to molt, mate, lay their eggs, and die. 

The synchronization is to starve out and subsequently overwhelm predators, ensuring large amounts of the species can still reproduce.

“The call is a long, loud, nasal "W-A-A-A-H-H-H".  They can be mistaken for a herd of sheep calling in the night. 

Fowler's toads are usually found in association with flood plains and river bottoms, as well as woodland borders.  They dig burrows into the sand in which they hide during the day.  They come out at night to forage on insects.”

“Loud staccato song-teacher, teacher, teacher-with geographical variation in emphasis. Flight song, often given at night, is bubbling and exuberant series of jumbled notes ending with the familiar teacher, teacher. 

Takes insects from leaf litter while walking on ground and rotting logs. (Young Ovenbirds pass through a stage of hopping while they forage.) Sometimes probes among leaf litter, hovers to take insects from foliage, or catches them in mid-air. Individuals probably defend feeding territories in winter.”

“A rapid, sputtering warble. 

Very active in foraging, does more flycatching than most warblers. Typically flushes insects from foliage while foraging on twigs and leaves, then frequently darts out catch escaping insects on the wing. Also searches on the ground among fallen leaves. In winter in the tropics, forages in mixed flocks with other birds, usually 3-30' above ground in denser foliage.”

“A thin, high-pitched, monotonous weesy-weesy-weesy-weesy, like a squeaky wheelbarrow. 

Adapted to creeping along limbs and on tree trunks to feed. Switches body from side to side at each hop while foraging. In early spring, takes dormant insects from tree trunks and branches. Sometimes flies out after flying insects.”
