My idea for Cyclops’s character if I did my own take on the Marvel Universe is that he would start off in complete control of his eye beams, but during a brief vacation, Cyclops and Wolverine are ambushed by Sabretooth and Lady Deathstrike and during the chaos, Scott gets his eyes cut out like Maria Calavera’s from RWBY. Scott is left in critical condition and is cared for by Logan for a while, but at the time they’re in the desert, the scenario somewhat reminiscent of that episode of X-Men Evolution where Mystique leaves Cyclops without his visor somewhere in like rural Mexico or something, but worse. Jean psychically feels Scott’s trauma and voluntarily begins accepting the Phoenix’s power to fly several thousand miles to save him when he gets cornered by The Marauders (Logan is busy dealing with Deathstrike and Sabretooth). After Scott and Logan are recovered, they get Scott to be healed, but permanent damage is done to his eyes, leaving him completely unable to control his eye beams from that point forward.
