Negative peace explained
Terrorism is correlated with measures of both negative peace, such as the Global Peace Index, and Positive Peace.
All three GPI domains and seven of the eight PPI pillars correlate with the Global Terrorism Index.
RWBY Volume 6 episode 8: Dead End Review
Or as some would also call it: “Mood Whiplash, the episode” and with good reason. Again, not using pictures this time because going over the episode makes me feel sick.
Anyways, we start where the preview left us off at: the two guards- who more than likely are the card guards from Alice and Wonderland- refusing to budge until the group explains they have Weiss Schnee and Qrow name drops Ironwood (”GENERAL IRONWOOD!”) and finally go get the one in charge.
Unfortunately, Winder Schnee is not the one but a woman named Caroline Crodavind who more than makes up for her lack of height with a zealous and fanatical devotion to Atlas- which manifests in barely veiled racism and a callback to Yang being shown breaking Mercury’s legs on national television. She’s also apparently responsible for Maria being scanned for life for bringing outside cashews- now while the punchline about airplane food has been done to death, bringing outside food is dangerous if someone on-flight has an allergy.
I wanna see a flashback to these two. Or a fanfic. Someone get on that, please.
Ultimately, they can’t get out of Argus. Qrow goes off to drink (again) and while they’re not in any immediate danger (yet) and they’re safe from Grimm (for now), it’s not healthy- not for his liver, or for the kids he’s supposed to be protecting. After that, Nora brings up Ozpin and...
Jaune, Nora and Ren’s anger, his outburst and attacking Oscar... well, they were nothing less than what I expected. Of course they’re angry, of course they’re upset: their teammate was killed for seemingly nothing. All because of a conflict between Ozpin and Salem that’s been spanning literal millennia. And unlike RWBY who’s had at least two days to mull over this, they’ve had barely minutes. However, that will never excuse Jaune taking it out on Oscar or throwing his own state of mind into doubt.
I’m still pissed that RWBY didn’t do more to help Oscar other than telling Jaune to knock it off. But unlike Qrow, Jaune quickly realizes he was out of line and Ren suggests doing what the fandom’s been doing since The Lost Fable: calm down and take some time to think things over.
Ruby ends up alone with Maria and Ruby spills all of her concerns to the old woman: Ozpin lying to them (she doesn’t use “Professor” anymore, signifying that lack of trust and lost respect for the man), the conflict they’d gotten themselves into, Jinn’s last question and their seemingly dead end to even getting to Atlas.
Maria instead has Ruby focus on what she can do and they finally have the conversation about Silver Eyes that the fandom’s been waiting for ever since the finale of season 3. I’ve seen a post wondering of Ozpin reincarnated as Maria’s father for a time, considering one of his reincarnations had children with silver eyes, but I’m not too sure.
We also get an origin for the Silver Eyes- Maria brings up the light the Elder Brother gave off that disintegrated the Grimm, as well as the silver eyes he took in his dragon form. Ruby is eager to learn how to “laserbeam monsters with her eyeballs” but a staff to the head ala Rafiki and Maria’s words make it clear that that line of thinking is not constructive.
“Rather than focusing on how to defeat evil, focus on protecting what is good in this world.”
I watched a Goblin Slayer analysis video which brought up the ideas of positive and negative peace. Negative Peace is the absence of war/violence- it commonly takes place after a ceasefire or after a war. Positive Peace is restoration of relationships, creation of systems that benefit everyone and a constructive resolution to the aftermath of fighting. So true peace is obtained not just when violence is stopped but are also managing their conflict positively and with the respect and attention needed for legitimate concerns. Rather than focusing solely on defeating the Big Bad, they need to protect the people and help foster good will between them so they can stop the rise of other villains.
This ties directly back into the words Maria helped awaken Ruby’s Silver Eyes: “Life is beautiful. It is precious. And it must be protected.” It also explains Ozpin’s strategy with Salem: he helped found the kingdoms and is trying to keep up peace and alliances. This doesn’t excuse not telling the people under him what they’re truly fighting for or for his general shadiness, though.
But when Ruby returns, Blake has troubling news: Oscar has gone missing.
AND THEN WE HAD TO WAIT TWO WEEKS FOR THE NEXT EPISODE.
The preview does give me some hope though: Jaune clearly knows that he messed up and has clear regret and upset over his behavior, determined to find Oscar. JN_R’s halting explanation to Saphron about what was happening also helps paint a picture of just how difficult the fight with Salem is, as they can barely give one outside vague and general wording.
I really want Ruby to chew Qrow out- she can’t get a hold of him on the scroll, so I can imagine her finding him at a bar and just screaming at him to get his shit together. I know she wants to and I know we want her to as well. I get that Qrow’s angry and depressed, but his behavior is inexcusable right now.
I’ve read posts about how the search will go down and the most popular version is that JN_R, RW and BY will break off into search parties and while they look for Oscar, will begin to talk about their feelings and perspectives over the last volume. JN_R about Phyrra what they do with this information, RW about both of their worries (Ruby about the quest and Weiss about returning to Atlas) and BY about the giant-ass elephant in the room that is their relationship and feelings.
Oscar meanwhile will run into Neo, Cinder or Adam and be taken as a hostage, forcing a confrontation between the two parties. CRWBY mentioned Neo doing something that would make the fans hate them, and I’ve previously mentioned that Neo could kill Maria... which would make me go from shrugging indifference to seething rage at this character. But after this episode, I hope this isn’t the case: it’d be such a waste of Maria’s character. I also found a post suggesting she abducts Adrian to use as a hostage, and while the thought fills me with rage, at least she wouldn’t be killing Maria... unless she does both.
Anyways during this confrontation, Jaune will be torn between getting revenge on Cinder and protecting Oscar- perhaps Cinder even taunts him, asking why he’s protecting Ozpin and not even making a distinction between him or Oscar. But he ultimately chooses Oscar and does everything in his power to keep him safe.
Another post suggested that Adam comes after Blake directly and that when she saw him on the train, it wasn’t a hallucination. Which would lead to the tag team match that fans have been clamoring for: Adam vs. Yang and Blake. I could see that happening... but not in this volume. I had mentioned on a previous post a theory that each member of RWBY would get a relic- Yang Knowledge, Weiss Creation, Blake Destruction and Ruby Choice and that Blake would only get Destruction after Adam is finally defeated/killed, signifying that sometimes destruction is necessary to protect others. Their confrontation could still happen, but it wouldn’t reach a full resolution there, at least that’s what I think.
While this is happening, Oscar will confront Ozpin and bring him out of his own head to help the fight. At the end however, this would be where JN_R and RWBY part ways with JN_R staying behind to possibly find a way to fight Salem while RWBY takes the Relic to Atlas.
Also someone give Oscar all the hugs. The fame boy did not ask for this bullshit.
