I don’t really see these two as OTP but they once thought they were OTP and that kind of screwed over like all of Remnant so…I may as well give them a oneshot that occurs before all that.
In work perhaps far more delicate than the precision required for battle, Ozma sliced the tops off of robust, red strawberries. The act stained the wooden cutting board with watery red, but nothing that couldn’t be washed out. He cut the beheaded strawberries further into halves before placing them onto white glass to adorn the plate of pancakes with a color different from the battered and mapley browns. Satisfied, Ozma placed a glass of orange juice on the tray and carried it carefully into the bedroom.
Salem was a sleeper, and a messy one at that. Her blonde hair was splayed all over her pillow, and some even dared to curl around her peach-toned arm. Her lips were delicately parted, a blush pink slightly cracked by dryness, and she breathed slowly through her nose without a hint of a snore. Salem’s lavender nightgown didn’t quite match the way she smelled sweetly of roses.
Ozma placed the tray upon her nightstand and knelt at her side. The corners of his mouth rose to a soft smile and he took her hand, grabbing her fingers gently.
“Salem,” Ozma whispered, shaking her fingers with two soft bobs up and down.
“Wake up,” he prompted. “It’s your birthday.”
“It’s what?” She mumbled sleepily.
“Your birthday?” Ozma repeated with a slight chuckle. “You’re seventeen today.”
Her bright eyes opened slowly, turquoise with a slight leaning towards green, yet in some lights they looked blue. It was as if even the universe knew that any color would reflect her beauty.
Salem saw Ozma’s handsomeness most in his smile instead, his boyish, charming smile. It brightened his brown eyes and made a seasoned warrior look his own age of eighteen.
“I suppose you’re right,” Salem said, using her arms to push her back up against the headboard. Her eyes looked sleepy, yet content. It was obvious she was still in the midst of rising from unconsciousness.
“I made you breakfast,” Ozma said as he picked up the tray.
“Ozma…” Salem said, only saying his name and yet saying every different version of ‘you’re too kind’, ‘you didn’t have to’, and ‘you spoil me far too much’.
“I know, I know, but,” Ozma said, hesitating before placing the tray down on her lap. “Here,” he said. “I want you to have the best birthday possible, and that starts with your favorite breakfast. A stack of cinnamon pancakes with maple syrup and strawberries on the side.”
“I thought we were out of orange juice,” Salem said with a slightly furrowed brow as Ozma made his way around the bed, walking to his side. “You said that the guy at the fruit stand said that oranges would be out of season for the next three months at least.”
“Which is why I bought him out,” Ozma said, sitting down next to her on the bed and pecking her cheek. He was sweeter than mangoes. Salem blushed and shook her head.
“You’re unbelievable sometimes, you know that?”
“I kno–”
Ozma was interrupted by a fierce coughing fit. Salem sat up as her heart twinged, her hand rubbing Ozma’s back.
“You’re coughing again,” Salem said, her eyes swimming with genuine concern.
“It’s fine, really.”
“Are you sure you don’t want to see a doctor?” Salem said. “I’m sure somewhere in town…”
Her voice trailed off when Ozma shook his head, looking over to her.
“I’ll be fine, really,” Ozma insisted. He cupped her cheek with his hand and she melted into it. “I promise.”
Ozma wasn’t going to tell Salem, on her first birthday after being rescued from the tower, that the young man she loved had in fact gone to the doctor, had been given only a few weeks to live, and was hiding rags of coughed-up blood in his pockets and various other nooks and crannies of the house.
Thus, only two things comforted him in his final moments.
The first was Salem, her eyes, her smile, her voice, her laugh. Sometimes when he was with her, he forgot he was dying.
Second was the words of the doctor, who said with absolute certainty that no, this terminal illness was not contagious, that Salem was out of harm’s way. Ozma thanked the God of Light that she would be okay.
Okay, so it’s been a while since I’ve posted stuff about RWBY. But the newest episode (Volume 8 | Episode 10) makes me wanna share my thoughts with you :3
So, remember this scene from Volume 6 | Episode 1?
