You know what I’ve had my fill of? Stumbling into vicious, heated arguments over whose opinions are “canon” and therefore valid. 9 out of 10 it’s about shipping, and 10 out of 10 I lose precious brain cells.
First of all, canon doesn’t...work that way? We can argue all about what “counts” as canon, be it exclusively and only what exists in the original text, anything implied, stated by the author, added in licensed properties, expanded universes, remakes and reboots, etc., and we would all be correct. Canon is a murkier and trickier subject than it first appears, and weaponising your own single-minded interpretation of it in order to invalidate all other readings and gain some sort of high ground is the most 8th grade book report-level media analysis bullgarbage I’ve seen.
Secondly, if you’re going to participate in a fan war and insist your interpretation is the only “true” one against a side that does the same, do...do you really think any company with an ongoing property will risk giving you what you ultimately want? No, think about it. If your fandom is known for, say, a ship war, doesn’t it make sense for a company to leave that conflict intentionally unresolved? Rake in those sweet, sweet shipper dollars and avoid alienating half the fanbase? The fact is, in the year of our lord Social Media, the way fans behave can alter the course of even the biggest franchises. Don’t ruin it for everyone else, please.
And thirdly, even if by some miracle, your interpretation became super explicit, ie your dream couple actually gets together, that doesn’t make the other people wrong or stupid? “My ship is canon and yours isn’t” doesn’t mean it’s a superior, more creative, better-written dynamic, nor does it amount to any moral victory, or make you a better/smarter person. It just means the pretty cartoon people kissed.
I’m not saying you can’t compile genuine analysis to support your own interpretation of characters and their relationships, even if your conclusion is never explicitly made clear in the text. Hell, I do that all the time. And I’m not saying you can’t have civil discourse with people who have opposing opinions. What I am saying is, uhhhhh don’t be a dick to people on the internet please??? You gain nothing and take from everyone, even people who aren’t involved??? Canon is an illusion, fiction isn’t reality, all characters are just someone’s OCs, and anything can be what you want it to be??? Chill out???????
