here’s my first art of the year: a heracross character, drawn for @negrek as a reward for the reviewing event going on right now at her pokémon fanfiction community, thousand roads! the character is from salvage, an awesome piece of fanfiction i’ve been burning through the last few days and hope to be caught up with very soon.

Do you think readers perceive your work - or you - differently to you? What do you think would surprise your readers about your writing or your motivations?

I think it’s probably always the case that readers perceive something different in the work than the author does; I can try to get certain things across but you can’t quite predict how the reader will react to any given thing. That said, I’m always pretty open about what I was actually going for, at least after a story is finished. There’s a certain philosophy that the reader should just be left to interpret what they read on their own based on what the text says, and I do agree that reader interpretations of a text are valid even when they’re not exactly what the author was thinking, but I personally just really love to hear about the actual thought processes that go into particular writing decisions, hence why I do stuff like talk your ear off about pretty much every decision I made writing TQftL because that’s the kind of thing I would love to read about fiction I enjoy. So I don’t know how much there is left to surprise people with, hmm.

The main things I can think of are stuff I’ve talked about before, like how my stories tend to be a lot more depressing and miserable than I’ve ever been and I’m writing all these extremely troubled people because I like that sort of thing and not because I’ve ever been there myself. A lot of the time when there are posts defending the existence of dark fiction where bad things happen they talk about it as a coping mechanism or catharsis, and I’m there like “...yeah, that’s very legit, great point, but I just like it, though.”

Also Morphic is sincerely not trying to dunk on religion, Dave is supposed to be a huge dick about it, I promise.

What other medium do you think your story would work well as? (film, webcomic, animated series?)

TQftL would probably work pretty well as a theoretical anime series, and that’s essentially how I see it in my head. Mark’s internal monologue can be fun but is not that important in itself, so it’d translate pretty naturally to a visual medium; most of the story is action and dialogue. Although I did make a comic of a scene from chapter 73 for an art class, I doubt most of the story would be at its best as a comic; the proportion of dialogue is probably too high.

Morphic would be a live-action film but with more on-model Pokémon than Detective Pikachu. It’s just about a film-sized plot, I think; obviously the pacing issues would have to be fixed and so on, but it’d be a workable movie once that was done. The Dave and Mia extras could be tie-in comics.

Scyther’s Story can just be a flashback episode in the QftL anime. The Fall of a Leader would probably work in absolutely no other medium than writing (unless it’s a high school AU dating sim) because it is 90% internal monologue.

Butterfree is also 90% internal monologue although I guess you could do it as a comic, since most of it is talking about memories, and you could illustrate those (whereas The Fall of a Leader’s internal monologues are just going on about the nature of morality etc. and if you tried to comic that it’d just be, like, an artist desperately trying to invent new angles from which to draw a Scyther sitting there thinking for a hundred pages).

Curse would probably work pretty well as a comic. Show the chant as vague scribbles until the climax. Probably rearrange the scenes a bit. If I ever become a good enough artist and have enough patience I could actually try it.

What part of writing is the most fun?

Those moments when you realize something about a character and everything makes so much more sense. And the moments when you finally get to write something you’ve been waiting to write for more than a decade. Kind of specific I know.

Definitely not the part where you actually have to write sentences. Curse you, sentences.

Jade: Describe the moment where you were the most courageous you’ve ever been in your life.

“Oh, what?  I’m not…  I think you’ve got the wrong…  I mean sure, I’ve done a lot of dangerous stuff, but like, that wasn’t brave, I was freaking out the whole time.  I was only doing it because I had to.”

“…I guess if I have to answer, probably that time I went off on my own during the birds mission.  I wasn’t really thinking about what could go wrong.  I just saw an opportunity and jumped on it with just my team, without relying on anyone else like I usually did.”

“Ugh, that makes it sound like I’m talking myself up or something.  I’m really not, honest.”

Jade: When you think about the most important person in your life, what is the first memory of them that comes to mind?

“…Wait, most important person?  That’s… how am I supposed to choose that?”

“Well… maybe something with all three of us…  Okay, first thing that comes to mind.  Uh, that time in school when Ajia dared me to steal Starr’s shoes, so I did, and she was gonna kick my butt, but I was too fast to catch.”

“…Kinda stupid, but it does say first thing.” *shrug*

[To be fair to Jade, I probably would have had an existential crisis if you asked me this at age 14.]

Stalker: Describe a time that your emotions made your heart feel like it was going to break through your chest.

“It was the day that I made my most valuable ally.  Before then, there were times when I’d had my doubts that it was possible.  Of course, I’ve known all along what I had to do, and I knew that I had to accomplish my goals no matter what.  But there were still times when doubts would linger in the back of my head, and I’d wonder if I was truly capable of this.  That day put those fears to rest.  I can do this.  I will succeed.  Nothing comes close to the elation of knowing that.”

*long pause.*  “Hm… I do get the feeling that the day I first set out on this quest would also qualify.  I don’t remember much of that day, though.”

Stalker: You’re being haunted. Who is haunting you?

*chuckles*  “How appropriate—I’ve asked that same question many times.  It’s human nature to want to ascribe something to feelings like that.  I suppose if I had to guess, it would most likely be myself, wouldn’t it?”

Starr: What is the greatest gift you could ever receive?

“How about a new family.  That’d be real fuckin’ neato.”

Jade: *whispering* “I, uh… I think it’s supposed to be, like, an actual thing.  That you could get.”

“Yeah, yeah.  I don’t know, how about money or something, then I can just get whatever I want anyway.”

Starr: Is there a price you can place on a life?

“That supposed to be a trick question or something?  Obviously there’s a price.  Everyone’s got something they’re willing to give up, and something they’re not, no matter how much they go on about how ‘you can’t put a price on something like that’ or whatever.”

Just curious, how did you hear about Breaking Bad in the first place? What made you decide to start watching it?

We watched Breaking Bad because our brother in law (Shadey’s sister’s boyfriend) kept saying it was amazing, and eventually Shadey downloaded it and put it on. Prior to this, my only knowledge of Breaking Bad was that at the time I followed the LiveJournal community Fandomsecrets every week, and I’d seen some secrets about Breaking Bad, completely out of context. I remember my impressions were:

1) Breaking Bad was a really weird name. I didn’t parse it as a phrasal verb, but just as if the concept of badness is being broken, except that didn’t even fully make grammatical sense and just sounded kind of cartoon cheesy. It was an utterly baffling title. This was my main opinion on this show.

2) I didn’t pick up on anything about what the show was about from the secrets, except that apparently there was a guy and most of the secrets seemed to be people opining one way or the other on whether or not (and when) he had Truly Crossed the Line That Could Not Be Uncrossed.

That’s it. That’s what I knew going in. It’s supposedly really good, the name is weird, and there’s a guy who may or may not have crossed the moral event horizon at some point.

it was not a good RP haha. the RP leader yelled at me for suggesting adding moves like Float and Gravity, and then gen 4 happened

also in the same sketchbook I found Rage Doodles from my first uni degree and uh oops still angry

the drawings of the starters are still pretty good aside from the oxhaust that was just traced furry art so I might post those sometime for throwback material
