3.] New Song of Salvation

      Isaiah 26:1 | A Song of Salvation       In that day 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗻𝗴 in       the land of Judah: We have a strong city;       𝘀𝗮𝗹𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘀 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀       and ramparts.

In the Bible, like for example in Isaiah 26:1, Isaiah is looking forward to the City of GOD & he says we have a strong City..

      rampart/bulwark: a defensive wall of a       castle or walled city, having a broad top       with a walkway and typically a stone       parapet.

And there right away you think Jerusalem, but then it says GOD sets up salvation as walls and bulwarks.

      Isaiah 26:2 | A Song of Salvation       Open the gates that a righteous nation       may enter—one that remains faithful.

      Open the gates, that the righteous       nation that keeps faith may enter in;

Even in the OT Jerusalem is a sign of something bigger, that's coming—not literal walls but in a sense, walls of salvation that're going to protect us 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘀𝗶𝗻 & 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵 itself. [6:51] 

Not actually a physical city, but a spiritual city which in the end of time will come down out of Heaven & transform  the Heavens & Earth into the new Heavens & new Earth.

Therefore only when we put Nehemiah into that story, in fact only when we put the thing we are reading in the Bible..

3.1] Build Wall Not To Block Others Out

the particular part of the Bible were reading

We've got to put it into that story, we have to see it as a chapter in that story; & we have to see it as pointing along the narrative arc, then things begin to open up.

Because you see there's a certain sense in which obviously, we can't directly apply in Nehemiah.. it's not right today [happen immediately], is it?

[Not right: ] For the people of GOD to build a wall around themselves, to keep out all unbelievers, to be culturally separated..

That's 𝗻𝗼𝘁 our job, it's also not our job to call down 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗲𝘀. I don't think or believe or certainly say to GOD, “please don't forgive them.”

      because Nehemiah was operating at a       different stage in redemptive history

At a time, when GOD was bringing HIS salvation through people of GOD, who existed as a nation- state—they existed as a group of people & they were a particular race..

      You couldn't have a nation-state without       a capital city with a wall around it because       if you didn't have a wall around it you did       not have security for urban life to develop

A place for jurisprudence, to develop instead of the vigilantism of when somebody gets killed & then the Avenger of blood comes & kills them.

      Vigilantism is the act of preventing,       investigating & punishing perceived       offenses and crimes without legal       authority.

A city was the place because of the wall where you could have 𝗷𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗿𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, where you get a rule of law—where you could have a stable economy & that sort of thing..

So if you're going to be a nation-state you got to have a capital city with a wall & so Nehemiah is 𝗻𝗼𝘁 really just simply 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻.

—————————————————————— He's not simply following leadership organizational skills to kind of just create economic prosperity for his particular people group—he knows for GOD to continue to do HIS work, as his covenant GOD that 𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗛𝗜𝗠 and they 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲. ——————————————————————

I'd like to open with prayer, let's pray:

Our FATHER,

We thank YOU for every opportunity we have to publicly open the Word of GOD & to learn from it—to listen to YOUR voice in it and we pray that YOU'd speak to us through YOUR Word which is YOUR inspired infallible authoritative revelation

We thank YOU for it, it's the most precious thing in our lives outside of the grace that saved us, & we pray YOU would help us to be good stewards that I'd be a good steward of it tonight.

We'd all be good students of it, as we learn and listen to it. We pray in JESUS Name, Amen

1.]  Spiritual Blindspots

Now I think one of the reasons we are studying Nehemiah of all Books at a Conference like this is not only to learn from Nehemiah itself — but also to learn from how we're learning from him

      Some of the OT books like Nehemiah &       Esther are difficult books to study; they       are difficult because they show us the       weakness in the way we approach the       passage and Scripture in general..

So for example you read the Book of Nehemiah & you try to study it together as a Christian[s] & you say: okay alright they the Jews came back from Babylon & they had to rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, so they did it even though they had opposition. They stayed with it, and organized well, they prayed and asked GOD not to forgive their enemies."

1.1] Scramble for Personal Relevance

So what was that about??

But on the other hand, they seem to stick with it & in the end they got the wall built. Now how do we apply that to our lives?

The answer seems to be leadership, organizational principles—so for example CH 2 which I'm about to read to you, it's often said this teaches delegation, if you have a job to do—divide it into parts.

      Give it to everybody & delegate it

A CH for which I'm about to read you this is how you solve problems, or when you get opposition here's how you solve problems, & so forth.

      But I really think that shows how shallow       our way of dealing with the Scripture is, it       shows that we tend to come to the Bible       the way we would go to Aesop's fables

      You read the story & then you say what's       the moral of that story you know..what is       the moral? What does that mean?

And so you read about David & Goliath and use the moral the story is the bigger they come the harder they fall & if you're ingenious enough you know it doesn't matter how big you are or something like that.

And so when you get to Nehemiah, generally what you will get out of it usually: leadership principles

      Well obviously it's true the bigger they come       the harder they fall & it's true that you can get       leadership principles out of Nehemiah...

𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝘁!

Nehemiah 3:1-32 | ¹ At the Sheep Gate, Eliashib the High Priest and his fellow Priests began to rebuild. They dedicated it & installed its doors.

After building as far as the Tower of the Hundred & the Tower of Hananel, they dedicated the wall.

² The men of Jericho built next to Eliashib, &   Zaccur son of Imri built next to them. ³ Fish   Gate was rebuilt by the sons of Hassenaah.   They laid its beams and installed its doors,   bolts, and bars.

⁴ Next to them, Meremoth son of Uriah, the   son of Hakkoz, made repairs; next to him,   Meshullam son of Berechiah, the son of   Meshezabel, made repairs; next to him,   Zadok son of Baana made repairs as well.

⁵ Next to him, the Tekoites made repairs,   but their nobles didn't put their shoulders   to the work under their supervisors.

⁶ The Jeshanah Gate was repaired by Joiada   son of Paseah & Meshullam of Besodeiah.   They laid its beams and installed its doors,   bolts, and bars.

⁷ Next to them, repairs were made by Melatiah   the Gibeonite, Jadon the Meronothite, & the   men of Gibeon and Mizpah, who were under   the authority of the governor of the region   west of the Euphrates.

⁸ Next to them, Uzziel son of Harhaiah, one of   the goldsmiths, made repairs, & next to him,   Hananiah son of the perfumer made repairs.   𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗝𝗲𝗿𝘂𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗺 𝗮𝘀 𝗳𝗮𝗿 𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲   𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗹.

⁹ Next to him, Rephaiah son of Hur, ruler of a   half-district of Jerusalem, made repairs; ¹⁰ next to him, Jedaiah son of Harumaph made   repairs across from his house; & next to him,   Hattush son of Hashabneiah made repairs.

¹¹ Malchijah son of Harim and Hasshub son of   Pahath-moab made repairs to another section,   as well as to the Tower of the Ovens.

¹² And next to them, Shallum son of Hallohesh,   ruler of a half-district of Jerusalem, made   repairs, with the help of his daughters.

¹³ The Valley Gate was repaired by Hanun & the    residents of Zanoah. They rebuilt it, installed    its doors, bolts, & bars, & repaired a thousand    cubits of the wall as far as the Dung Gate.

¹⁴ The Dung Gate was repaired by Malchijah son    of Rechab, ruler of district of Beth-haccherem.    He rebuilt it & installed its doors, bolts, & bars.

¹⁵ The Fountain Gate was repaired by Shallun son    of Col-hozeh, ruler of the district of Mizpah. He    rebuilt it, roofed it, & installed its doors, bolts,    & bars. He also repaired the wall of the Pool of    Shelah near the King’s garden, as far as the    stairs that descend from the City of David.

¹⁶ Beyond him, Nehemiah son of Azbuk, ruler of    a half-district of Beth-zur, made repairs up to a    point opposite the tombs of David, as far as the    artificial pool and the House of the Mighty.

¹⁷ Next to him, the Levites made repairs under    Rehum son of Bani, and next to him, Hashabiah,    ruler of a half-district of Keilah, made repairs    for his district.

¹⁸ Next to him, their countrymen made repairs    under Binnui son of Henadad, ruler of the    other half-district of Keilah.

¹⁹ And next to him, Ezer son of Jeshua, ruler of    Mizpah, made repairs to another section    opposite the Ascent to the Armory, near the    angle in the wall.

²⁰ Next to him, Baruch son of Zabbai diligently     repaired another section, from the angle to     the doorway of the House of Eliashib the     High Priest. ²¹ Next to him, Meremoth son     of Uriah, the son of Hakkoz, made repairs     to another section, from the doorway of     the House of Eliashib to the end of it.

²² And next to him, the Priests from the surrounding     area made repairs. ²³ Beyond them, Benjamin and     Hasshub made repairs in front of their house, and     next to them, Azariah son of Maaseiah, the son of     Ananiah, made repairs beside his house.

²⁴ After him, Binnui son of Henadad repaired another     section, from the house of Azariah to the angle &     the corner, ²⁵ and Palal son of Uzai made repairs     opposite the angle & the tower that juts out from     the upper palace of the King near the courtyard of     the guard. Next to him, Pedaiah son of Parosh and ²⁶ Temple servants living on the hill of Ophel made     repairs opposite the Water Gate toward the east     and the tower that juts out.

²⁷ And next to them, the Tekoites made repairs to     another section, from a point opposite the great     tower that juts out to the wall of Ophel.

²⁸ Above the Horse Gate, each of the priests made     repairs in front of his own house. ²⁹ Next to them,     Zadok son of Immer made repairs opposite his     house, next to him, Shemaiah son of Shecaniah,     the guard of the East Gate, made repairs.

³⁰ Next to him, Hananiah son of Shelemiah, as well     as Hanun the 6th son of Zalaph, made repairs to     another section. Next to them, Meshullam son     of Berechiah made repairs opposite his quarters.

³¹ Next to him, Malchijah, one of the goldsmiths,     made repairs as far as the house of the temple     servants & merchants, opposite the Inspection     Gate, & as far as upper room above the corner.

³² And between the upper room above the corner     & the Sheep Gate, the goldsmiths & merchants     made repairs.

Organization of the Work

1 Then the high priest Eliashib set to work with his fellow priests and rebuilt the Sheep Gate. They consecrated it and set up its doors; they consecrated it as far as the Tower of the Hundred and as far as the Tower of Hananel. 2 And the men of Jericho built next to him. And next to them Zaccur son of Imri built.

3 The sons of Hassenaah built the Fish Gate; they laid its beams and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars. 4 Next to them Meremoth son of Uriah son of Hakkoz made repairs. Next to them Meshullam son of Berechiah son of Meshezabel made repairs. Next to them Zadok son of Baana made repairs. 5 Next to them the Tekoites made repairs, but their nobles would not put their shoulders to the work of their Lord.

6 Joiada son of Paseah and Meshullam son of Besodeiah repaired the Old Gate; they laid its beams and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars. 7 Next to them repairs were made by Melatiah the Gibeonite and Jadon the Meronothite—the men of Gibeon and of Mizpah—who were under the jurisdiction of the governor of the province Beyond the River. 8 Next to them Uzziel son of Harhaiah, one of the goldsmiths, made repairs. Next to him Hananiah, one of the perfumers, made repairs, and they restored Jerusalem as far as the Broad Wall. 9 Next to them Rephaiah son of Hur, ruler of half the district of Jerusalem, made repairs. 10 Next to them Jedaiah son of Harumaph made repairs opposite his house, and next to him Hattush son of Hashabneiah made repairs. 11 Malchijah son of Harim and Hasshub son of Pahath-moab repaired another section and the Tower of the Ovens. 12 Next to him Shallum son of Hallohesh, ruler of half the district of Jerusalem, made repairs, he and his daughters.

13 Hanun and the inhabitants of Zanoah repaired the Valley Gate; they rebuilt it and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars and repaired a thousand cubits of the wall, as far as the Dung Gate.

14 Malchijah son of Rechab, ruler of the district of Beth-haccherem, repaired the Dung Gate; he rebuilt it and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars.

15 And Shallum son of Col-hozeh, ruler of the district of Mizpah, repaired the Fountain Gate; he rebuilt it and covered it and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars, and he built the wall of the Pool of Shelah of the King’s Garden, as far as the stairs that go down from the city of David. 16 After him Nehemiah son of Azbuk, ruler of half the district of Beth-zur, repaired from a point opposite the graves of David, as far as the artificial pool and the House of the Warriors. 17 After him the Levites made repairs: Rehum son of Bani; next to him Hashabiah, ruler of half the district of Keilah, made repairs for his district. 18 After him their kin made repairs: Binnui, son of Henadad, ruler of half the district of Keilah; 19 next to him Ezer son of Jeshua, ruler of Mizpah, repaired another section opposite the ascent to the armory at the Angle. 20 After him Baruch son of Zabbai repaired another section from the Angle to the door of the house of the high priest Eliashib. 21 After him Meremoth son of Uriah son of Hakkoz repaired another section from the door of the house of Eliashib to the end of the house of Eliashib. 22 After him the priests, the men of the surrounding area, made repairs. 23 After them Benjamin and Hasshub made repairs opposite their house. After them Azariah son of Maaseiah son of Ananiah made repairs beside his own house. 24 After him Binnui son of Henadad repaired another section, from the house of Azariah to the Angle and to the corner. 25 Palal son of Uzai repaired opposite the Angle and the tower projecting from the upper house of the king at the court of the guard. After him Pedaiah son of Parosh 26 and the temple servants living on Ophel made repairs up to a point opposite the Water Gate on the east and the projecting tower. 27 After him the Tekoites repaired another section opposite the great projecting tower as far as the wall of Ophel.

28 Above the Horse Gate the priests made repairs, each one opposite his own house. 29 After them Zadok son of Immer made repairs opposite his own house. After him Shemaiah son of Shecaniah, the keeper of the East Gate, made repairs. 30 After him Hananiah son of Shelemiah and Hanun sixth son of Zalaph repaired another section.
