She’s the goddess of rebirth and snakes. By far she is my fav of the Gods Forsaken pantheon at the moment. Her face claim is perfect too.
But...Nengal is also kinda creepy as much as she is beautiful and badass. It’s awesome!
She was born from the blood of the Great Snake mixing with the desert sand.
She’s got a soft spot for her priests/priestesses and always provides for them.
She is unerringly confident and is unable to be killed.
Nengal revived both Detra (Death god) and Isaal (God of storms) when Detra ate Isaal (and Isaal’s sister took revenge).
Yet, she is creepy as fuck and...not necessarily the best in the pantheon to meet.
She’s extremely capricious and doesn’t really have a concept of what death is (and why humans avoid it)
Her appearance is rather unnerving. She never blinks and actually cannot close her eyes. Her skin is lightly scaled in places and her jaw can actually unhinge when she wants it to.
Did I mention she’s also highly skilled in poisons?

Because I haven’t posted about this WIP for a while and I have a very very basic first draft of part of the first chapter. Please enjoy.
Ashenra approached the shallow pond in the middle of the garden. The midday sun glistened off the glassy surface, hiding the rocks underneath.
Unhooking her pouch from her belt, she took out the snake skins she had collected. They threatened to break apart under her fingers, clear and flaky. She knelt down and gingerly set them on the water.
Ripples spread out from the floating skin, breaking the sun’s reflection with pale white.
The tree in the middle shuddered. Ashenra blinked and a woman appeared in front of it.
Her dark skin stood out against the light bark behind her. She wore a purple linen dress draped over one shoulder. Fanned out like the hood of a cobra, her hair spread out just above her dress.
Ashenra ducked her head as the woman walked across the pond.
“You choose me,” she asked, her voice smooth and clear as a desert stream.
“I have come to devote myself to you,” Ashenra recited. She focused on the water, looking away from the reflection. “I will keep your will in my heart.”
“Look at me.”
Nengal looked down, her eyebrows politely raised. Tight braids close to her head gathered in the back with three large twists separating the sections.
“If you wish to go through with this, turn around and choose.”
Slowly Ashenra stood up and turned to see a line of snakes facing her. She had never seen so many and with such variety.
A small twig-thin snake caught her eye. Deep black outlined bright green scales. It stared at her, completely unblinking.
She stretched out her hand and rested it in front of snake. It curled up, watching her hand, and then slithered up her shaking arm.
A wave of relief washed over her as scales slid up her arm. She would survive, unlike so many.
“We shall see if you are fit,” Nengal said.
Ashenra turned in confusion and gasped as the snake bit her neck. Her hand flew up to cover the mark, but the snake did not strike again. Instead, it curled loosely around her neck.
The bite throbbed with sharp thorn-like pain spreading.
“You are now mine,” Nengal said.
Btw, Ashenra is the character I’m naming Ammy’s girlfriend after! Nengal is really fun too and there will be a lot more of her in this WIP.

There’s a lot of deities and regional deities, so I’m going to try to keep this as an overview and focus on the major deities or important deities to the WIP.
Nengal
Goddess of rebirth and snakes
Born when the Great Snake was slain and its blood mingled with the sand
Somewhat capricious and cautious
Has problem of killing humans when she’s upset with them (hence why many don’t survive her trials to become a priest)
Has a hard time grasping the concept of death
As far as anyone can tell, she can’t be truly killed
Weapon of choice: Poison
Detra
God of death
Nobody’s sure how he came into being
Highly antisocial
Without him, humans would likely die since he keeps the demons in their place
Once ate Isaal because he tried to force Detra to interact
Detra gave him a warning and followed through, Alsedia (Isaal’s sister) got pissed off and killed Detra, Nengal came and revived them both
Often associated with vultures and followed by a pair of lions
Elhanai
Father of the gods, patron of kings, god of the winds
Just as old as Detra
Little interaction with most humans
Ethirat
Mother of the gods, goddess of fertility and motherhood
Consort of Elhanai
Widely worshiped and held in higher regard than Elhanai
Idols of her are buried in the foundation of most homes
Isaal
God of storms
Arrogant af
Created to slay the Great Snake (which he did)
Has a chariot that he rides and brings in the storms, the wheels spark lightning and the sound of it is the sound of thunder, driven by donkeys
He causes a lot of trouble
Just blame everything on him
Has a daughter named Feragul, goddess of fire
Sherah
Guard of the Underworld, daughter of Feragul
Nobody knows what she looks like
Does not speak, communicates through growls and roars
Resheb
God of plagues and healing, Son of Nengal
Held in just as high regard as Nengal and more widely worshiped
Actually pretty shy
One time Isaal scared him and he accidentally caused a plague of locust
There’s many more deities than what is listed above, but I felt these were the most relevant. I’m more than happy to take asks on them.
