Carnivorous Plants 101: Nepenthaceae
The Nepenthaceae family has only one genus, Nepenthes; there are about 110 different species in this genus. These species all feature passive pitfall traps that are shaped like pitchers.
Plants in the Nepenthes genus can be found in what is often described as “the Old World tropics”, which also leads many to call Nepentaceae the “Asian Pitcher Plant Family”. Their distribution range includes Madagascar, India, the Seychelles, Southeast Asia, northeastern Australia, New Caledonia, Sumatra, Borneo, and various other regions in that part of the world.
Additionally, various species have adapted to live in a wide variety of conditions; some are native to the monsoon regions of Thailand, while others prefer sandy swamps and slow-flowing rivers. Ultimately, the one commonality between these various locales is that the environment is usually moist, and the soil is normally acidic and/or low in nutrients.
