According to Greek mythology, the sea god Poseidon sent a magnificent white bull to Crete at the request of King Minos, who had prayed for a sign to legitimize his claim to the throne. He promised the god to sacrifice in his honor whatever the Olympian sent him. Upon seeing the animal's beauty, Minos decided to break his promise: he kept the bull among his herds and sacrificed an ordinary animal instead. As revenge for this offense, Poseidon caused the bull to go mad and ravage the island. He also caused Minos's wife, Queen Pasiphaë, to fall madly in love with the beast, and from this union the Minotaur was born.
