They caught her with an orange.
Charlotte thought she had been so careful. The group had left with FOUR; two with supplies, the others with weapons. Charlotte didn’t know where they were going nor did she care. That was her first mistake. When the group set down their supplies and entered a building barely a mile from their camp, a building that they had already picked clean, she didn’t pause to wonder why. She simply darted forward and unzipped the bag as quickly as she could. That was her second mistake. It was a TRAP laid out for her.
Someone, a fifth person, grabbed her arm just as she snatched up an orange. The grip was tight enough to hurt, tight like the grip of the dead, tight enough to bruise, and Charlotte lost her mind. She kicked, punched, clawed, bit, elbowed, kneed, and head-butted, thrashing around like a wild animal caught in a trap. Charlotte knew better than to SCREAM. No one but the dead ever answered her. It only took two of them to drag her back to camp but all five came. They dragged her past a gate guarded by the dead and into a building full of people... living people. Living people everywhere. Charlotte finally stopped struggling as blue eyes went glassy with terror, blinking uncomprehendingly at a man marching toward them.
