^this is one of those things where you combine two phrases. I can't remember what it's called. like ''we'll burn that bridge when we get to it'' or ''You opened this can of worms now lay in it''
this obviously being a (entirely unintentional) combination of ''call in backup'' and ''throw in the towel'' - which I think is very funny because it poses a situation where you are viewing a conflict from both inside and outside of it. you're someone who would need backup - but you're also someone to throw in the towel (help someone else recoup after a loss).
I'm choosing to interpret an intentional use of the phrase ''call in the towel'' to mean 'take the step prior to calling backup or throwing in the towel.' call in the towel as in 'get backup/aid ready, be prepared to swoop in or to cut our losses, but take no action yet' and will be adding it to my vocabulary as such because I think a phrase like that is gonna be useful in the coming months and years. for no reason in particular.
