Rock You Like a Hurricane

Isaac's coming...

Let me start by saying that the state of Louisiana is in my thoughts; and on the seven year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, I really hope that Isaac is nothing but a mere rainstorm so these poor people don't have to endure that awfulness again.  

That being said, is there ANYTHING more hilarious than the news reporting on hurricanes, tornadoes and tropical storms?

I get that the public watches the news to stay informed and receive up to date, accurate and useful information about current events, weather, traffic, etc.  I get that we need to get all the possible facts and information in order to be well-informed and educated.

But, guys... you can report on severe weather without actually STANDING OUTSIDE IN IT.

Nothing makes me laugh (and simultaneously cringe) more than watching these poor, idiot newcasters standing outside in the very weather they are warning us about.  Let me get this straight: you're telling me to evacuate, or at the very least stay indoors, and YOU are standing IN the ocean during a hurricane?  Hmm.

I can just picture the exchange between a newscaster and their producer/boss on the day of a big storm:

"Morning everyone!  I'm here and ready to report on the hurricane.  What's our plan?"

-"Glad you're here, Cindy.  We're going to need you to report outside on the beach."

"Outside?  But -- it's pouring... there are 75 mph winds... isn't it dangerous??"

-"Dangerous?  No.  Besides, we'll give you a windbreaker to wear, along with a baseball cap that will inevitably keep blowing off of your head.  You'll be fine!  Keep in mind you'll need to SCREAM so everyone can hear you over all the noise of the ocean, wind, rain and thunder.  Now you get out there and report the latest on the storm; we'll be inside the studio watching you.  Knock em dead!"

Huh?!??!  And the moronic thing is, they actually DO this!  What are they paying you, newscasters?!?!  I don't even like to stand outside when it's drizzling; I certainly wouldn't hold a microphone and speak to a cameraman during a tornado.  I'm now watching these pathetic men and women continuously fall, risk their lives, hold on to poles and buildings for dear life, and get soaked - now that's dedication.

I really believe that the only reason networks do this is for our entertainment; to laugh at these poor souls while we sit inside; safe, dry and warm.  Real nice, guys. Real nice.

But seriously, Louisiana...stay safe!
