I feel like an old soldier, attending one by one, the funerals of war comrades. Ritchie was the last of the Newcastle team. Benjamin got it first-- from the Invunche, and me. Then Gary Lester-- from Mnemoth, and me. Now Ritchie's incinerated by the Tongues of Fire-- and me. Christ, it's been ten years-- will I never stop paying for that debacle?

For a second request of the day (I know, shocker given my track record) but can I have a Rising Light Newcastle crew imagine or something similar. Something light hearted with a bit angst. Like maybe Anne-Marie and John talking about Kate and Ben when they first joined the crew while the whole crew is together.

A/N: I wasn’t really 100% sure what to write for this, soI did a kind of drabble thing; I hope that’s alright for you and it doesn’tseem too odd in relation to everything!

John lent againstthe bar, watching as Kate spoke to the others. Their little crew. Ben wassticking close to her side, like a shadow that she just couldn’t seem to shake.Not that the young woman seemed to mind, far from it in fact. She was part ofthe reason he was staying so close, her arm brushing against her best friend’swhenever she wasn’t gesticulating. She was currently having a debate – though,John thought it was more of an argument – with Gary about music.

‘What’re youthinking, John?’

Anne-Marie’s voicebrought a small smile to John’s face, pulled his attention away from the littlegroup that they had gathered. All of this was down to her. All of them unitedby a common interest in magic.

‘Just wondering ifwe really needed more hands,’ he said, before taking a pensive sip of hisdrink.

‘She saved yourlife.’

He scoffed, butthere was very little humour behind it. ‘All right, love, point made,’ headmitted begrudgingly, leaving his empty glass on the bar. ‘But seriously, didwe have to let him come?’ He nodded towards Ben, who still seemed to be on theedge of the group. There was something about the young man that rubbed him upthe wrong way.

Anne-Marie sighed,leant back against the bar beside him. ‘He’s sweet,’ she admitted, tilting herhead to one side a little. ‘And besides, I don’t think she’d have come if hecouldn’t.’

‘Would that havebeen a bad thing?’ John watched as Kate laughed, as the mere sound seemed todraw Ben out of his shell a little. It was an infectious sound, and her smileseemed to light up the room. There was something about her that made him wantto make sure that she was all right; definitely not the kind of person to getdragged into everything that they were doing.

‘Are you gettingsoft on me?’ Anne-Marie nudged his shoulder gently before gently touching hischeek. ‘They can help with all of this. She’s brave, and he’s basically anencyclopaedia for all this kind of thing.’

John heaved a sigh.He knew that she was right; but it was also more than that. Already they seemedto have quite easily integrated themselves into the little group – or, Kate hadat the very least.

One job. That’s allthat it had taken. One job that they hadn’t even really meant to have been apart of. Kate had all but stumbled on it, and obviously Ben wasn’t far behind.

Ritchie had invitedthem out for drinks, something that Judith and Frank hadn’t argued with.

‘Come on, beforeyou know it you’ll be an old man, John Constantine,’ said Anne-Marie, beforetaking one final swig of her drink and offering him out a hand.

He chuckled,shooting her a smirk as he took her hand. ‘Never,’ he vowed, allowing her todrag him over to where the others were.

‘You didn’t getbeat up by bikers again then?’ Kate greeted, grinning at him.

‘Pretty sure youscared them all off,’ he assured her. He could have sworn that Ben momentarilylooked towards Frank, who was talking feverishly with Ritchie.

Kate seemed toswell with a dramatic kind of pride, amusement burning behind her eyes. ‘Wellof course.’

‘Only because theythought you were a clown with all the grinning,’ teased Ben, a coy little smileon his face.

Kate deflatedslightly. ‘Benjamin!’ she squealed, hitting his shoulder gently.

John cast asideways glance at Anne-Marie. There was something refreshing about the two ofthem, about the way that they made the others smile. John just hoped thatthings wouldn’t change too much for them when they learnt the truth behindeverything that they did; that they had to face.
