Are You Making These Puppy Potty Training Mistakes?
I just brought home a puppy, and potty training is harder than I expected.
I want the accidents to stop fast because cleaning up messes all day is exhausting. But I remind myself, my puppy is a baby. Their bladder isn’t fully developed yet, and accidents are part of learning. It’s frustrating, but I stay patient because I know this phase won’t last forever.
I also adjust my expectations. My puppy isn’t going to be perfect right away, and potty training won’t happen in a week. Most puppies need a few weeks to really improve, and expecting them to hold it all day in a crate just isn’t realistic at first. Instead of getting upset, I focus on teaching and helping.
To make things easier, I use tools that support training. The Halo Collar gives me extra peace of mind by creating clear boundaries and a sense of safety. My puppy doesn’t always like pottying on a leash, so I set up a safe potty area in my yard using Halo’s GPS wireless fence. It gives my puppy the freedom to sniff and choose a spot while staying safe. Inside the house, I use Halo Beacons to block off areas where accidents are more likely, like carpeted rooms.
I keep in mind that the Halo Collar isn’t for very young puppies. I wait until my dog is old enough to understand guidance, usually around 5 months old, before starting formal training.

What precautions should you take before bringing your dog to Thanksgiving?
Before bringing my dog to Thanksgiving, I’ve learned the hard way that preparation makes all the difference. Now, I always check with the host first to make sure pets are welcome and to ask if anyone attending has allergies or is uncomfortable around dogs.
What essential tips can help make crate training a puppy easier and less stressful?
When I began training my puppy, I quickly discovered how much effort and patience it really required. At Halo Collar, we understand that raising a well-behaved dog doesn’t happen overnight it takes consistency and commitment.
