When He is Protective Over You
You rolled the revolver in your hands.
Your fingers trembled against the hard metal which burned from the scorching heat of the barren wasteland you found yourself in. A few weeks ago, you were still in the Glade, struggling to hold yourself together for 3 years while fighting to stay alive within the maze. Yes, you were in the company of other Gladers but when you found out that you were the only girl sent up through the box, it sent shockwaves through your body and mind. Here you were thrown into the company of tall and brawny boys who you had absolutely no clue as to who they were and were forced to live with them until you managed to solve the maze. With each day the trepidation and burden grew heavier and heavier. You felt yourself shrinking. The pressure intensified in your heart. Until one day, someone offered their hand . . . and he happened to be the second-in-command, Newt.
You jerked and nearly tossed the revolver over the ledge in the process. When you flipped your head around you saw the person whose memories just filled your mind walking towards you.
“You alright there love?” He asked in that silky, deep voice of his which made you grow weak in the knees. He slipped passed the round boulders and sat down beside you gently rubbing the top of your head. “You know I always find you.”
You smiled and shifted your eyes to the ground, anywhere to avoid letting him see the blanket of pink covering your cheeks.
“Why aren’t you eating with the others?”
“Nor sleep,” he muttered.
You caught a sudden movement in the brambles below. You instantly straightened.
“What is it?” He asked concerned.
“I thought I just . . . never mind.”
He chuckled. “You should try to keep your mind off things. You worry too much Y/N.”
“I can’t help it . . “ you muttered.
He offered a sympathetic smile, “I know . . its ok.” After a bit of silence he offered, “You know you always have us right? Have me? We got your back Y/N.”
“I know its a lot easier said than done but maybe you should try shifting your mind towards lighter things . . positive things. Why don’t you just hang with the Tommy and I sometimes, you know .. . well actually Tommy can be a bit reckless . . . umm scratch that . . . you could hang out with me - wait I mean not with me alone, unless you want to - no wait ummm I mean with me and the other settlement folk, you know? Get to know them a bit? You haven’t really talked to them.”
“I don’t really like crowds . . . or people.”
He laughed once again, a sound that was nothing but pure bliss ringing in your ears. “Yeah, I have noticed. If only I can get you some of that herbal tea that you always enjoyed making back in the glade.”
“I don’t think we can afford to have the things we like at this point.”
After sometime, you peeked upward to catch his eyes staring at you with intense curiosity.
“What’s up with you Y/N?”
“It’s nothing,” you muttered placing the revolver aside and fighting with your fingers, “It’s just -“
Newt sighed. “Come on Y/N, you know we are safe here.”
“We thought so to when we were in the glade.”
Newt looked up to the sky and ran his fingers through his hair. He let out a deep sigh which almost made you wish you had not said anything at all.
Out of all the members in the glade, he was the one who first approached you. Made you feel at home. It wasn’t long before he maneuvered his way dangerously close to your heart. But you couldn’t let that happen. Not when you lived in complete fear and he faced his life with confidence and strength he gained from the Gladers. Next to him, who were you? It wasn’t long before you realized that you and him . . . are impossible.
You stood up and prepared to leave. But you found yourself tugged by the waist, spun around and then crash into a sturdy chest. You peaked up to find doe-like eyes staring back at you.
“Why do you always do that?”
“Do what?” You asked, your voice merely a whisper.
“Run away from me,” he replied back gently placing a strand of hair behind your ears. He leaned forward until his lips were a few centimeters away from yours until rationality struck your mind abruptly.
“We can’t,” you gasped pulling away from his embrace only to be pulled back even closer, his lips softly grazing your own.
“You don’t mean that,” he replied huskily.
Of course you didn’t. But where would you two go after this? In midst of all this chaos with the greivers, cranks, WCKD, flare and finding a cure, your world was in absolute hell. It was all too overwhelming.
“YES I DO!!!” You screamed and pushed him away with a strength in your arms you didn’t even know you possessed.
His face fell and almost instantly you could see the look of hurt on his face. A moment of silence passed between you two.
“Hmm,” he replied softly shifting his eyes away from you, “Didn’t know you felt that strongly.”
Damn it . . . you’ve got it all wrong.
But you couldn’t bring yourself to say those words. He ran his fingers through his hair awkwardly while backing away from you and entering back into the facility. You were left alone upon the cliff as the evening tapered down to reveal a soft sunset. You wished you could say it. You wished you could embrace him and tell him how much he means to you. You wished so strongly that you would be able to be by his side forever. But you could not put those dreams to action. Not when you were living in absolute fear.
You followed him back down to the settlement compound where the rest of the lone survivors had lived. After the dealing with the sweltering turmoils within the Scorch, you and the rest of the Gladers finally found some type refuge within the colony in Denver.
Despite being constantly told of how secure this facility is, your levels of paranoia would never cease to subside. It had actually gotten worse over the past few days when the Base Commanders and Leaders left the facility as part of their weekly routine to check in with the Right Arm. Defense levels were low that you felt so vulnerable. You had seen the horrors in the Scorch and how it had claimed the lives of your friends. How safe can this place truly be?
You quickly awoke from your recollections when you saw Newt being tugged away to the other Gladers by a blonde girl who was originally from the Base Colony. “Newt! Where were you? We were all waiting!”
You sighed. Deep down you felt your insecurities rising.
You knew from the start she had her eyes on him even though he was completely oblivious to it. Despite his friendly nature with everyone, he shifted awkwardly in her grasp and glanced back at you. Your mind frantically raced trying to decide what to do that you eventually decided to shift your eyes to the plate of chicken and rice on the side table and began devouring it. When you looked up he was long gone.
Yeah . . . that was completely smooth.
Will things ever get back to normal?
A sudden earsplitting scream brought you out of your daze. Stunned, you placed the plate down and looked around to see the others as perplexed as you were.
“What was that?” Michele called
“I think it came from the tunnels,” someone replied.
Whispers escalated to the point where you couldn’t even hear yourself think. A scream came once more . . . this time you knew it was not a human cry. And that’s when you realized that you did see something in the bushes when you were with Newt earlier. There were signs before. You just didn’t act upon them. All this time you were being watched until they had the opportune moment to strike.
Fear shot through your veins in a lightening speed which made you so disoriented you nearly toppled to the ground. The entire group ran with immense panic from side to side, some trained militia men urging others to their posts while civilians sped gathered to their designated safe zones. But it was too late.
The earth began to quake from the thunderous parade of steps from the chambers below. The tall statures slowly earned cracks from the sudden shifts. There was clearly an army coming for the colony.
The tunnels exploded with screams once more that it earned shocks and panicking cries from everyone around you. You turned around to see your worst nightmare come true. A ghastly group of a disfigured humans with tattered clothing raced from the darkness, some of them looking completely animalistic and crouched on all fours, and others who could almost be mistaken for a human if it weren’t for those yellow eyes and ruptured skin.
Your vision slowly blurred until you could almost not recognize the people in front of you. Suddenly, you felt the world closing around you. It became smaller and smaller.
“Please,” you gasped as your breaths became short, crouching to the ground. A sharp pain struck though your head from the screams and cries which you could no longer differentiate. You held your head with your numb hands as tears filled your eyes as the suffocation became intolerable.
“Y/N!” Came a cry. You recognized that voice but you were too overwhelmed to even look up. “Its ok,” the warm voice replied pulling you into an embrace.
“Newt, we should move to the alleys,” a girls voice replied and you felt yourself moving away from the crowds.
“Deep breaths,” the voice returned, “its ok.”
You felt the commotion decrease and the steady rise and fall of his chest. Accompanied by his heartbeat, you breaths started to follow to the same pace. A rush of oxygen cleared your senses and you felt yourself regaining control of your mind at last. Though slightly disoriented, you managed to stand back up.
“Are you ok?” He asked, cupping your face in his hands.
You managed a small nod and he embraced you tightly like never before. “No one knew where you were. I thought I lost you.”
You smiled. “But you always find me.”
He pulled away giving you a sweet smile and pressed a chaste kiss on your forehead. “Come on, we need to get to the others.”
Michele peaked from the side corners and signaled that it was ok to leave.
“We need to get to Tommy and the others. I have no idea how - “
“We were being watched,” you quickly replied.
“They were observing us,” you said, “Learning our every move. They realized our schedule. When the leaders would leave and they took that moment to their advantage.”
“They are getting better,” Michele stated, “I mean we once thought they were mindless drones but they still seem to have the capability to learn from maybe the remnants of the intact human brains.”
“We have to get to the others. Fast,” Newt replied.
A scream howled from above. You glanced up in shock and realized two cranks were crouched on the walls above peering down on the three of you. They both jumped down to the alley until they had you all cornered on both sides. Newt’s grip on your hands grew tighter.
Michele’s revolver was up on one end while Newt had his eye on the other. They steadily approached you two and in one quick second, they lurched forward with no warning. The sudden jolt confused both of you when one landed right on top of Newt.
“Newt,” Michele screamed when the other crank grabbed her by the throat hoisting her up against the wall.
“Run Y/N,” Newt exclaimed, struggling to shove the Crank off of him.
But you couldn’t. You just couldn’t bring yourself to do so. While all the thoughts of WCKD, Scorch Trials, Cranks had scared you to death, you knew your biggest fear would be losing Newt and you absolutely cannot let that happen.
Taking a deep breath, you pulled your own revolver from your jacket pocket and aimed at the Crank holding Newt. Struggling to gain the perfect shot, you pulled the trigger back slightly when you felt a strong tug on your back. You were then flung to the other side of the alley landing on top of Michele who was now on the ground unconscious. You pushed yourself upward despite earning a few gashes and scrapes on your arms and legs.
“No, Michele!” You cried out, trying to wake her up, “Please get up!”
You glanced forward and noticed the two Cranks above Newt. You didn’t have to think twice.
You stood up and pulled the trigger.
A shot fired through the back of one Crank which howled with pain and staggered to the ground. The other managed to look at you with curiosity when it suddenly lost interest in its target and moved to focus on you.
This one was larger than the other and definitely a lot stronger. Taking several long strides it came closer and you began to fire at will. 3 bullets fired and it still showed no signs of stopping. Stunned, you realized you had emptied all the bullets of your gun and staggered backward looking for the exit.
Until a large shot echoed through the alley and you found the Crank drop to his knees and fall face down to the ground. Behind him you saw Newt lower his hand gun.
A soft sigh escaped your lips. Newt ran towards you and helped examine Michele. “I think she is ok, she is still breathing.”
A flash of light came at your direction urging the both of you to shield your eyes.
“Anyone there?” A loud voice rang.
Looking up you saw a member of the Right Arm running towards you two.
You both nodded and the man quickly helped Michele up. “Alright, we have a chopper ready for transport. We need to leave this place right now. Its completely overrun.”
You reached forward and Newt automatically found your hand. Together, you both ran forward.
It wasn’t long before you found your new home. This location was more of an indoor facility than the previous, which made you feel slightly at ease. Nevertheless, the crowds was something you just had to get accustomed to. Especially during the early lines for Breakfast. They were torture.
It soon became easier when Newt started to grab a tray for you, so you could avoid the lines. Made you sit with the Gladers so you were more comfortable. Ever so often, he would ask you to go for some walks around the compound, which you happily agreed to.
“You know, I never told you this love, but that was very brave of you to do back there,” he said suddenly.
“Back when we were in Denver.”
“Ah . . I don’t know what came over me.”
He titled his head slightly as if trying to decipher your words.
“I was just worried that I might lose you,” you stated honestly, “If that happened, I don’t think I will be able to handle it. Probably would be worse than anything else . . “
He smiled and placed something in your hand.
Opening your fingers you noticed it was a canister filled with herbs with a fresh, sweet and floral aroma. You smiled.
“Tea,” he said softly, “Had to win some races with the boys for that.”
“But you don’t like to run.”
“Yeah . . . it was worth it, I got to see you smile.”
A blush crept up your cheeks.
He walked forward and gently tilted your chin upward to meet his eyes. “You have no idea how precious you are to me,” he said softly and captured your lips with his own. A warm sensation enveloped you and you felt yourself melting into his embrace. He brought your waist closer to his own until there was no space between you two. When the two of you finally pulled back for air, he rested his forehead on yours and pecked your lips sweetly.
“I wanted to do that for the longest time.”
