Which episode to show a newbie?
So, last night I introduced my boyfriend, who had never seen an episode of Doctor Who, to the show. We watched the first two serials of the very First Doctor, An Unearthly Child and The Daleks.
Now, I’d like to continue with him through all the Classic years and do it all more or less in order, but I did want to show him an episode from recent years to just give him a tease, a little taste of what the show has become after 50 years, so he can sort of get an idea of where it’s going, of what is essentially always Doctor Who versus what’s developing and changing between 1963 and 2016.
I’m looking for an episode from series 7 on, partly because that’s the most recent stuff and therefore most informative about what the show is like now (odd that New Who isn’t all that new anymore, isn’t it?), and partly because I feel like that’s the point where the cinematography really upped its game to feature film levels and hasn’t stepped back since (not as a stroke against an era’s film quality, mind you. All the eras are very much in line with the best television of their day).
I was thinking something with the Daleks might be good, so he can see how they’ve come along with the series, and as The Magician’s Apprentice/The Witch’s Familiar is very bogged down with mythology (Davros, the Master, Time Lords, U.N.I.T., regeneration energy, etc.) I was thinking either Asylum of the Daleks or Into the Dalek.
Other choices that jumped out at me were Dinosaurs on a Spaceship, The Bells of St John, Listen, Mummy on the Orient Express, and The God Complex (which I know is pre-series 7 but it’s just so creative and well done).
Thoughts?
For the past couple months, I’ve been enjoying the delights of rewatching a show (New Who) with a friend who’s watching it for the first time and doesn’t know most of the plot twists. Easily the best part is watching his reactions when I realize oh my god:
- He doesn’t know the Daleks come back at the end of Army of Ghosts
- He doesn’t know that Professor Yana is the Master and that YANA is an acronym for You Are Not Alone
- He doesn’t know that Captain Jack is probably the Face of Boe
Last night we covered oh my god:
- He doesn’t know that Rose comes back at the end of Partners in Crime
- I conveniently neglected to tell him that Peter Capaldi is in The Fires of Pompeii
I can’t wait until we get to Season 6 and OH MY GOD HE DOESN’T KNOW WHO RIVER’S FAMILY IS
the joys of rewatching Doctor Who with hazy memories:
not knowing whether TenToo was a dream or some alternate ending / AU fic.
What happened is: Back in 2013, I introduced my brother and his girlfriend to Doctor Who. We watched it all together, but stopped not long after the 50th.
Today, my brother comes to me and says, “[my girlfriend] is not sure if she dreamed this or not, but did you show us some kind of alternate ending for Doomsday? Or maybe some kind of fanfic or something?”
So I tell him that I don’t think I did, why is she asking?
“Cause she is introducing a friend of hers to the show, so she is rewatching it, and they are on Doomsday and they both cried, but she seems to remember something about Rose getting a Tenth Doctor somehow? And I don’t really remember what happened either.”
...therefore I had the pleasure of informing them that what she was remembering was actual canon, she just had to wait for the end of season 4.
“Sorry sweety”
Second Doctor who fanart!
What is wrong with me T.T
I regenerated and turned out to be a total Whovian
“Doctor Who will only have a Christmas special this year and no Season 10 until next spring? Oh no, what will we do??“
- *sidles up* Hello friend! Can I interest you in some...
~*~*~*~Big Finish Audio Dramas?~*~*~*~
“But Hannah, what are Big Finish audio dramas?”
- I’m glad you asked! Big Finish is a company that specializes in audiobooks and full-cast audio plays. They make stories for all kinds of stuff like Dark Shadows, Blake’s 7, Pathfinder, The Avengers (UK), and more, but they’re best known for Doctor Who! They’ve been keeping the Classic Series alive in its own way by reuniting the old casts for brand new adventures through time and space!
“That sounds cool! But where do I start?”
- Another excellent question! Big Finish’s epic Whoniverse catalog is a bit of a mixed blessing. On one hand, the sheer quantity of stories is bound to be a bit daunting to newcomers. But on the other hand, there’s so much to choose from that there’s something for everyone! Also, the earliest Main Range stories are on a permanent price reduction, so you can get dozens of great stories for the low low price of just 2.99 each! So, what are you in the mood for?
“I want to check out an underrated Doctor!”
- Great! Here, start with Storm Warning and go on some adventures with Paul McGann in his triumphant return as the Eighth Doctor!
“I want to know more about the Doctor’s old friends!”
- Then it sounds like the Companion Chronicles are just for you!
“I want to meet some new companions!”
- Looks like you’re on the right path with Storm Warning and the excellent Charley Pollard, but also take a look at The Marian Conspiracy and the inimitable Evelyn Smythe, or even The Eye of the Scorpion and the fantastic Erimem if you like historical AND diverse characters!
“I want to cry my eyes out!”
- You have come to the right place, friend. The Holy Terror will do you good to start, as will Spare Parts, Project: Lazarus, Arrangements for War, Jubilee...
“I want a good old-fashioned comedy!”
- Well, if you like self-parody, The One Doctor is where it’s at! And there’s also Bang-Bang-a-Boom! for all you Star Trek and Eurovision fans.
“I like Could Have Been’s!”
- That could go one of two ways. If you’re looking for TV stories that could have been made but weren’t, there’s The Lost Stories! If you’re looking for What If’s, you’ll want to check out Unbound!
“I want a long-running spin-off starring the supporting duo of an old Fourth Doctor serial!”
- Jago and Litefoot. There is so much Jago and Litefoot.
“I want to explore the universe beyond the Doctor! Preferably with some cool female characters!”
- Ah, then I’ll bet you’d enjoy adventuring with Bernice Summerfield or Iris Wildthyme or hanging out with Romana and Leela in Gallifrey!
“I’m a New Who fan and I don’t know anything about the Classic series, and I’ve never listened to audio plays before. Help?”
- Friend, your timing couldn’t be better. As it happens, some very exciting developments are happening over at Big Finish at the moment, since they recently got the license to work with New Who material and that means if your wallet wasn’t suffering already it will be now a boatload of cool new stuff! There’s a bunch of things yet to be released, like the amazing Tenth Doctor Box Set (YES FRIEND YOU HEARD ME RIGHT DAVID TENNANT AND CATHERINE TATE ARE REPRISING THEIR ROLES AS TEN AND DONNA AND THAT IS AMAZING) and Classic Doctors New Monsters, but right now you can dive right in with The Diary of River Song or The War Doctor or UNIT: Extinction (with Kate Stewart and Osgood!) or even Torchwood!
“Wow, thanks! At this rate, I’ll survive this hiatus like nothing!”
- My pleasure!
“Wait, where did all my money go?”
- Exactly.
~*~*~*~Happy Listening, Whovians!~*~*~*~
This year, while having its own setbacks, has been full of great things. I introduced my 2yo daughter to Doctor Who and she’s in love with it. She wants to be Clara. And for her birthday, I got her the 11th Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver. Uses it everywhere, and I couldn’t be more proud. Who knew the Sonic does stuffed animals?
