SCREECHES ROLAND AND CUTHBERT FOR 12
Cuthbert stumbled into the cramped bedroom, a smile still on his lips from the memory of his parting jab at Alain. His smile fell suddenly as he saw Roland lying on the bed, his back to Cuthbert, surely fast asleep. He had been through a lot as of late, though even before that Roland had been a very serious young man, say true. Though their adventures, if such horrors could be called that, had ended in much tragedy for Roland, it did not seem to change him too much. Cuthbert was privately thankful for that. “Look at you Ro,” he said to his sleeping friend. “Been through Hell in Hambry and beyond, and you still sleep peacefully.” Cuthbert had a sudden wild urge to go to the bed and be next to his friend. Uncharacteristically, he resisted. His smile returned to his face, slowly. “You’re constant nature lets me do the same. You’re my rock, Roland.” “Bert, you mad bastard! Get back out here, we’re still celebrating!” came a cry from outside. He grinned mischievously, then turned and left to rejoin the group. Roland turned over a moment later to make sure his friend had gone. He had heard him, of course, and his already grim expression grew worse. He decided then, however, to make sure Bert never saw it. He promised himself he would never tell Cuthbert of his deeply troubled mind, or his fear that Gilead was already damned and they with it. Roland would lie and hide his true face from his closest companion, because he feared that seeing Cuthbert break may very well break him as well.
