Top 5 Guilty Pleasures: Devin

Choosing "guilty" pleasures is both a moral struggle and a lot of fun for me. If something is a true pleasure, why should we feel guilty about it? Well, upon excessive thought, the reason we feel guilty is because of overly critical people who are a little too bold with their opinions... like us on this blog. When I chose these artists, I found myself thinking in terms of what music I felt like I needed to defend, as opposed to what I was embarassed to listen to. Writing about this music not only gave me the opportunity to make a case for these often ridiculed artists, but to think about the consequences of the way I impose my own opinions on other people.

Taylor Swift

The classic "that's for twelve-year-old-girls" artist. I blindly shared that view a couple years ago before my sisters forced most of her second album upon me during a road trip. I've since learned that she is a genuinely talented lady with a brilliant knack for writing pop-music and a voice that's cute, controlled, and dissarming. Though some of her lyrics can come off as cheesy and juvenile, most of her songs manage to land a genuine blow to your heart in some way, and her third album showed a huge leap in maturity and skill. With our pop stars constantly and desperately trying to push the limits of general decency, it's comforting to have a down-to-earth girl like Taylor Swift fulfilling the need for something simple and beautiful.

Nickelback

In sixth grade, Nickelback was the ultimate rock band for me. In the last couple years, they've turned into some sort of joke to people. And I get it. When your singer has the weirdest haircut in history, the only songs you release to the radio are sappy, generic ballads, and your last two albums sound like a horny fourteen year-old wrote them, you might have a hard time getting any respect. However, I maintain that Silver Side Up and The Long Road are two very solid rock albums and that even their current heavier songs have some of the slickest guitar riffs of all time. The band does unfortunately seem to be getting worse as time goes on, but I'll always have a soft spot for early Nickelback.

Garth Brooks

Country music in general takes a lot of harsh words from people, so I wouldn't be far off calling the whole genre a guilty pleasure for me. But I probably listen to it the least, and I'm very picky about it. Garth Brooks is one of my favorites, and for whatever reason, he seems to be the go-to when somebody needs to make a country music joke. Truth be told, he is one of the most charismatic musical figures of the last 20 years and one of the greatest storytellers in country, if not music in general. He has an overwhelming list of memorable hits and his voice is wide-ranging and distinct. To me, he is the ultimate rock-star of country music.

Ke$ha

Speaking of pushing the limits of general decency, I'm a big Ke$ha supporter. Her half-singing, half-squealing sleaze-pop is frustratingly catchy, and I never mind giving in to its appeal. I appreciate the fact that she's in on the joke, and I dig the carefree raunchiness. Her whole act has a strange charm to it, and a bit of a sad-but-true reflection of our generation. Not to mention, the production on these songs is insane! I have a tough time holding still when any of them come on, which is the only thing I should really feel guilty about.

James Blunt

Yeah, "You're Beautiful" cuts to the core of me. Sorry.
