You guys ever think about how Martyn is known for being deceptive and turning on his own allies, but he’s never done that to Ren or Cleo?
Minor Nice Life spoilers, but I had some thoughts on Martyn:
I watched Martyn’s POV of Nice Life and he harbored Cleo, the last remaining yellow, until he couldn’t anymore. He only started attacking them because it was pointless to defend them and to get his stats up (which, can’t blame a guy for that LOL)
But that made me realize that every time he’s been on Cleo or Ren’s side, he’s never betrayed them. The closest we get is what I mentioned above, and then when he punched Cleo off a cliff as a joke in Double Life and killed them both.
Please correct me if I’m wrong, because I’m not 100% sure, but I just think it’s really interesting.
Like, he betrayed the Southlands to join the Shadow Alliance in Last Life (to join REN lol) and also when he was selected as Boogey, he had immediately tried to kill Grian even though he had every opportunity to walk away from his ally and try to find someone else. Martyn just pulled out his axe and started swinging!
Limited Life is the most prominent example of being deceptive. Scott and Impulse tried to have their honor duel, and Martyn said “Nah”. I guess this could be a betrayal, but by this point in Limited Life, alliances were null and void. Still, immediately slaughtering your ally and then rushing the last remaining contender is pretty indicative of how cunning Martyn is.
He was a menace in Secret Life, especially since he was red so early on. Nobody trusted Martyn and for GOOD REASON.
But then you look at 3rd Life, where he had every opportunity to kill Ren and didn’t do it. We all talk about how Ren asked Martyn to behead him on the altar to get Ren to red, but the second part of Ren’s loyalty test really stands out to me: Ren had nothing on him, he was freshly red, and he immediately punched Martyn to see if Martyn would take the bait and kill him. And Martyn didn’t.
Would Martyn have betrayed Ren at the end of 3rd Life if they made it that far? Personally, I don’t think so. I think they would’ve duked it out much like Grian and Scar did, but I don’t think Martyn would’ve immediately pounced on Ren and backstabbed him in the first season, where everything was new and different and uncertain. But that’s just my opinion.
And then in Past Life, he stuck with Cleo until they died. He was red early on in that season as well, and yet he never targeted them. He had many opportunities to, and as the end drew nearer and nearer, I thought for sure he would’ve tried to take Cleo out, teammate or not. He didn’t hesitate with Grian in Last Life, or Scott in Limited Life. But he never went for Cleo.
