The Coma
Author: Alex Garland
Illustrator: Nicholas Garland
Book: 1/1
Genre: novel, fiction
Summary: “Carl awakens from a coma to a life that is disconcertingly off. He arrives at his friends’ house without knowing how he got there. Nor do they. He seems to be having an affair with his secretary, which is pleasant, but unlikely. Further unsettled by leaps in logic and time, Carl wonders if he’s actually reacting to the outside world, or if he’s just terribly mistaken. Could it be that he is simply not awake?” (Garland; original summary)
Review: First, I chose to use the Garland’s original summary because it is simple, to the point, and captures the book’s essence perfectly; I did not find the need to write my own summary like I normally do. Secondly, this book took me on a fascinating journey. Garland’s writing made me feel as though I was completely immersed me in the character’s mind and enveloped in Carl’s consciousness. Carl’s journey through his peculiar reality made each page turn more exciting. At each moment, I was eager to see where Garland would take the story and what will happen to our character. This book was a quick read, being exactly 200 pages. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a page-turner and/or a book that makes you think deeply about the relationship between consciousness and reality.
Rating: 4/5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I'm rolling up my thoughts I'm lighting up my dreams I'm blowing out my problems I'm letting out some steam If it wasn't for the weed, I might blow at the seams I may look happy But life aint always what is seems.
