The root of all Healthy Friendships is communication
this ended up a very long and probably strange 'ask,' apologies... so. i have not been satisfied with possession theory as a concept for a while. mainly because of the flaws that possession theory bears in the translation between dt's metanarrative and textual narrative, with mainstream theorizers often overfocusing on metatext to such a degree that it has become almost impossible to discuss nuance. the prevalence of transphobic/ableist/enbyphobic takes of kris in the mainstream dt space certainly doesn't help. however, i also had problems with "krissociation meta." i often found theorizing in that space somewhat reductive in that "steering the ship too far in the other direction" way. though it's more than understandable to want to correct the prevalent fanonization of possession theory so i get it. i just think it's quite intentional that "the player" is being winked at. but if undertale is anything to go by, the player probably isn't going to be present in the narrative, but taking the role of an unseen presence or something similar. which is why kris preservation society initially caught my interest. i saw theorists in that space trying to bridge what i saw as a narrative hole in older krissociation theories by analyzing the potential role/s of the SOUL and the circumstances surrounding that and how it applies to the broader meta aspects of the story. but, nothing really stuck out to me. probably because my current pet theories tend to be focused on amalgamate dess (the DT extractor is a deer skull by the way.) and Egg man/CAMAB kris stuff. oh, and this silly theory that has since taken over my every thought. thanks to your reblog, a few days ago i was reading @duskwingmoth's comic where an au chara and kris are cohabiting, and it struck me at just the right time, as i had recently read your analysis on the misunderstood weird route frame. you see, the silly theory, self described as "deltaswapped" (no relation to deltaswap au) is a joke i once made at the end of chapter 1: "toby is finally making his own underswap au with chara as the main character and frisk as the ghost haunting the narrative, except this time they're called kris and ahar." i was even going to get pirate frisk fanart commissioned but i forgot about it in the time between chapters 2 and 3. (i'm also more partial to "terc" now anyway.) except NOW i'm starting to wonder if i was somehow actually onto something there. my favorite aspect of undertale's pacifist ending, as a system myself, has always been how it takes frisk's want to show everyone love and then turns it inwards, towards chara and ultimately themse- oh. (i cannot put into words how much of a lightbulb moment this was. it's still hitting.) i haven't yet done the effort of checking through deltarune to see if it stands up to scrutiny, but i'll be damned if "kris is connected to/'possessed' by DT!frisk as an identity thing and that's why they feel so compelled to SAVE kris (and themself)" hasn't made me a kris preservation society truther. anyhow, thank you for all the theories, and thank you for reading my ramble.
And thank you for rambling in our asks! (that is always welcome and enjoyed)
I'll admit I had a good belly laugh over "Kris and Ahar(t)". I really miss the art of Chara floating around Frisk so the mental image of Ghost Pirate Frisk was very good. And yeah, the chapter 1 ending really feels like it's trying to be an inverse of No Mercy UT's ending. I remember even back then thinking it was a neat visual seeing a "Chara"-like character tossing away a heart, rather than taking it. You may very well be onto something there with Deltaswapped (great name btw)
@duskwingmoth's art is sooooo good (yea tagging you in bestie dw just saying nice things), and yes, Nick Deltarune is such a fun concept. I also really appreciate their "Devil and Angel Kris on your shoulders" way of depicting this relationship too, especially with how it puts a focus on the duality of Light and Dark World Kris
It's just really refreshing to see all these different ideas being able to float about and express themselves. We definitely don't want to try and be a centralized authority on "what Kris's relation to the SOUL" really is
And, your point about the game intentionally winking at the player—I mean, you're not wrong! There is, I think, room to play around with how the player is experiencing the game, even if they still mostly remain outside of it. Heck, the entire premise of our "A System Plays" series is that it centers on three players having a group conversation about how they approach playing the game, as a means of analyzing Kris's character and how the game wants you to relate to them in all situations, with none of the three being accused of playing "wrong" or doing it the only "right" way
Thanks for following along with our theory posting, and hopefully we'll have more of the analysis series (and more fanfiction from us!) in the near future
