Plural Kris headcanon is everything to me. Ralsei can become real with this one weird trick!
If you think about it, it's actually trivially easy to make a plural reading of Kris based purely on the player/character dynamic. That feeling where most of the time you have control but you're getting backseated constantly by Kris's unexpected interpretation of dialogue options. And occasionally, will just have the controller literally ripped out of your hands (ie. Kris pulling out their SOUL). That's just a dysfunctional system with an easily understood symbol of where you fit into it (the red heart being the only thing you're really controlling)
The problem is 99% of the fandom finds Evil Ghost Demon Heart Possession more palatable than a heavily stigmatized mental disorder
It is really funny how the pillar of most Possession Theory arguments rested on how Noelle described Kris' behavior on the Weird Route during Chapter 2 and 4, in addition to all of the flaws in the argument originally, we now know with some certainty after the Chapter 5 Weird Route that when Noelle says Kris "isn't Kris", she means not that they're literally a different person but is (and in large part projecting her own issues) no longer who they're "supposed to be", in contrast to Noelle believing she can't stop 'being Noelle', throughout both routes.
I suppose it's funny, then; being Noelle Holiday is so contagious she convinced more than half of the fandom that her Truman Show delusion was the reality! Also, I feel largely vindicated as I've been saying for literal years Noelle is dissociative (specifically as early as 2023 I said she probably has OSDD-3, also known as trance disorder), and with the recent revelations that's more or less become the text of the game!
“I don’t care if there’s one of you, two of you, or ten of you. All that matters is that you’re you, however many Krises that is..."
Art for my plural Kris Krusielle fic, "Twosie Beats Onesie (But Nothing Beats Threes)"
(Be warned, the fic itself takes place during an alternate Chapter 5; this art is spoiler-free, though)
sequel to this (kinda)
Gonna organize our thoughts on Chapter 5 below!
Opening of the chapter is a heartbreaker. The conversation between Kris and Toriel feels very well written on the normal route, how she’s still out of it from last night but trying to make amends to her child.
This was the point where most people speculated that Asriel would come back and that would lead to some tension in the Dreemurr family. We’ve been pretty set on the “Asriel’s never coming back” train since Chapter 4 and this sets that up further. If my sibling consistently invaded my privacy, my parents fought even after splitting, and I couldn’t move on from my dead/disappeared ex, my wouldn’t either.
Kris is looking worse and worse without their soul and it really isn’t clear what they’re getting up to anymore. They open the fountain on screen so it’s clearly not to set up anything for the day. Going to the shelter to plan? The ending implies they don’t know Susie is sleeping in the school closet/Castle Town, so it may not be dark world related.
Unlike some commentators, I thought the festival as a whole and the romance specifically was handled well. It was important to establish a stronger connection between Noelle and Susie that hadn’t existed on account of the former not being a party member up to this point. Everything up to and including the lake scene sets Susie up to invite Noelle into the dark world out of this new trust she has in her, and puts Noelle in a position where she’s going to have to pick between being beholden to her parents forever or building something new with Susie and Kris.
I don’t think Krusielle or any of the poly ships are dead yet. Kris’s jealousy is a major plot point that chapter 6 should center around. They feel neglected in life by everyone around them (a point addressed on the Weird Route, more later) and they need their friends to take them out of the pit of despair they’re digging for themself.
The visceral reaction to Flowery is definitely intended. Guy shows up after some very dramatic story beats, spends the entire time bullying Ralsei, and becomes the chapter boss. He’s obnoxiously perfect. I don’t click with him the way I did with someone like Queen or Tenna and I appreciate that he’s served his primary purpose in the plot.
I hope we don’t see him moving forward but if we do, there’s one character interaction that will be absolutely crucial: him and Noelle interacting. Flowery is a plant facsimile of Rudy and with his inevitable death, he’s an opportunity for Noelle to explore her feelings of loss and grief.
As another Kris dark world I can’t help but look at the other flowers as aspects of Kris they can’t express. Feeling only partially human, their need for punishment, a diverse and at times contradictory gender identity.
Gender is a deep topic this chapter between Kris and Ralsei. Obviously Flowery goads Ralsei into standing up for herself and rejecting the prophetic princedom for her own sense of self. Looking forward to more analysis of this as we wait for chapter 6. Plus, Mad Mew Mew arguing with her own body? Getting more explicitly plural with Kris in my opinion.
Chapter ending sets Kris back to where they were at the start of the game. They built up these friendships but now Susie feels that this adventure has moved beyond the three of them, that Kris isn’t enough. Their dad is gone now, their brother is not coming back. They keep trying to stay away from confronting the trauma of the shelter, even trying to tear up the other code (with their SOUL in them no less!) and it’s not working. Kid’s in for a tough time over the next years.
Kind of running out of steam so going to save weird route reactions and chapter 6 predictions for later.
wow the flavour text if kris goes to school with the toast is very "holy shit a bowl of ramen"-esque
