@reaganwarren said: My life is about 70% ladies - have known mostly women in my entire life and very rarely have entered mostly-male venues. so I say nah, never too many ladies.
yeah see like for lots of folks, tons of ladies is normal. I guess for a large portion of (male) fantasy readers, there aren't a lot of ladies in their lives *snap* But! ladies are gr8 so I'm gonna have loads of them haha
baisre said: 11/10 scientists agree that you can never have too many ladies.
quillery said: seeing as how most stories are at least 70% dudes I think you are bringing justice here lol
mallitovcocktail said: with there be lady pain?
OH SO MUCH LADY PAIN. just today I thought of some magnificent and angsty lady pain~
sonicorca said: No such thing as too many. Make so many ladies that dudebros accuse you of misandry
Seeing as how it's in the fantasy genre, I'm already betting on some whining from the male side haha. I've got plenty of great male characters, but you know~ *shrugs*
arcanefayth said: never enough ladies! the whole book can all females if you want!
lingeringdust said: no, one can never have too many ladies. there needs to be more in fact. make all of your characters ladies to make up for the fact that there are too many men-only books! :D
whole...book...of...ladies? :o what is this concept you speak of? haha
killingyoudarling said: You may need to think about why you’re making a bunch of female characters. If it’s just for the sole purpose so you feel you’re going against the norm, or if it actually contributes to your story. Because the first isn’t always the best reason.
I've been thinking about this stuff a lot actually. Like all day and all night haha. Weighing the pros and cons of certain characters and their genders, seeing if it would match the character or not--making little fanfics in my head where I genderswap a character to see if I like it or not. Most characters are still the same as they were when I made them, while others are more malleable. Today I decided to make a male character female for a strange reason: the music I was listening to, of all things. Then that opened up a whole other side to that character, as well as a character that interacts with her a lot. It definitely turned out more interesting than I had originally planned (I was somewhat stuck on that plan before). I try never to make a character be a soapbox-character, even if I can funnel my feminist rage into one or two of my lady characters haha

momecat said: Diversity is good but lbr there can never be too many ladies! And 70% sounds sweeet
oxgall said: just do 70% ladies I mean think about all the desperately needed femme slash fanfiction that you can provide this way
OHOHOHO i can't wait~ But also! If I do it right (and hey, my own pov won't be perfect lbr), and nobody dies (I'm still working on the finer details) I'm thinking one or two go canon in the end because even though there will be lady pain aplenty, there must also be lady happiness.
kiterieaine said: Pfft no such thing as too many ladies! After all nobody pays any attention when it’s the reverse so clearly it should be fine. You should check out The Girls From Alcyone. It’s mostly girls and it’s fucking awesome.
Oooh, I'll have to check that out! The fantasy genre is kind of a sausage festival in general, but there's always an audience for oodles of ladies--moreso these days, I think.
ghostbeez said: Don’t worry. Just don’t. the ratio of lady characters to male in Tamora Pierce’s books usually is greater in the lady’s favor, but it never feels wrong. In fact it feels really fucking refreshing.
I've still got Tamora Pierce on my bedside table to read--I'll get to it soon! Like, I know my insecurity about having ~too many ladies~ is silly because why would that ever be a bad thing? Most fantasy is male-dominated, and we've kind of become used to it. It's the norm. So changing the norm, even if it's a logical change, feels weird. But since I've made the decision to make it a taco party instead of a sausage festival, I'm gonna party //hard//
