I guess Nick really wants (literally) nothing from Gatsby but at least hopes he'll be fine and deserves more.

But by the happening he almost lost him so his anxiousness slowly grows, and the more he feels uneasiness the more he longs for him because he found that his feelings to Gatsby is not just about friendship anymore. Now he wants more, longs for him but struggles to repress himself because he's afraid that his feelings would brim over.

And Jay - lovely idiot - Gatsby is still blind for Daisy so he can't understand the reason of Nick's anxiousness.

And finally for once in his life Nick tries to tell how he feels but it doesn't work well so Jay worries, and says like "You're not like yourself these days, old sport, and that worries me. Are you alright?" And Nick's knocked out and just says "What is like myself?" And Gatsby doesn't follow him so he asks "What?" And Nick says, "Can't I be more honest with myself and in front of you? Can't I want it more? For just once in my life?" And Gatsby asks again, "What is it you want more?" And that's when Nick says, with his trembling voice, finally letting his tears stream down his cheeks but still looking directly at his only crush, "Love."
