Art is not one great act of creation, but many small ones. When you read one of my poems, you fail to see the weeks of careful work it took me to build it—the thinking, the scratched-out words, the pages I burned in disgust. All you see, in the end, is what I want you to see.
— Samantha Shannon, The Priory of the Orange Tree
Niclays: I noticed we have slowly started to phase the ‘B’ out of our bromance
Jannart, down on one knee, ring still out: I mean, yeah, I guess
Do you not see that this is a divine mission? No, I do not, you witless cabbage.

Tané: I can’t stand here in the same room as the man who ruined my life.
Niclays: then leave
interesting that niclays admits to himself that he should have chosen temperance, the virtue of scholars and philosophers, as his patron virtue but instead took courage as his patron at the age of twelve, and meanwhile truyde was sent to inys to learn temperance and rejects it so fervently that her pursuit of courage turns nearly foolish without anything to mediate it
Before I started reading tpotot I heard that two out of the four protagonists are queer and I was like cool. Half is an adequate amount for someone who likes to read about queer people. What I didn't know was that 1) the wlw romance is by far the most prominent 2) the only other romantic story that also really matters is gay 3) romance doesn't really play a role for the other half of the protagonists. Loths connection with Marosa is so minimal it hardly counts (don't get me wrong I like their potential!). It could become more prominent in a sequel but for now this is what we have. And I cannot recall a single instance romance or marriage have played any role in Tané's story. It's refreshing to read about a young woman who doesn't even think about romance for once - and that doesn't mean she doesn't have other meaningful relationships!
Adeline had been looking for Nic for a while and when she found him, she was suddenly filled with fear. She wanted more than anything for her brother to know nothing about how Lestrange died but a feeling of dread washed over her, “Nic... are you busy? I wanted to talk to you.”
