Okay, I’m cheating because this is part of a Megamind WIP that, if I finished it, would be ABSURDLY long, and so it’s been very much relegated to the bottom of the mental pile. But I really love it and it lives in my head rent-free, a lot of the time.
Quick summary to explain this section - they’re discussing the “Reset Button”, and we learn why, exactly, he knows that the science is impossible. “Erwin” is an OC, and the antagonist of the fic, who is trying to bait Megs into working with him.
“We...Minion and myself...we tried to fix it. Tried to fix...this.” He gestures at Roxanne’s injured shoulder. “It was impossible. We…” he takes a deep breath and looks at Erwin.
“If you don't tell her, I'd be more than happy to.”
“No! Roxanne. Listen. We tried to find the... the perfect outcome. It wasn't possible. There were so many factors, too many to properly take into account. There was no way we could-”
Megamind spins to face Erwin, who grins at him. “Tell her!”
Roxanne can't help it. “How many...how many of what?”
Megamind sighs. “Each... attempt required us to start from the beginning. Programming a starting point was possible. But from there...” he rubs his face, “We hit that fucking reset button seventy-six times. And this,” he motions again to her shoulder, “was the best outcome. Each reset took seven hours. I spent five hundred and thirty-two hours trying to stop you getting hurt. Twenty-two days. It was…”
Silence. Deafening silence. Roxanne turns to Erwin, still wearing that stupid smile. “What?”
Megamind speaks first. His voice quakes. “Three times. The thirteenth run. The forty-second. And the penultimate. Then I quit. I did...I did everything how it had happened the first time. Reset my fucking reset. I couldn't see that again. I couldn't...It was…”
He stops. He goes still, entirely still, barely even breathing.
