Time for Kion and Rani!
My adult versions of King Kion and Queen Rani of the Tree of Life!
I feel like Rani could have turned out better :'), although I admit I haven't drawn her as much.
Kion look great tho! The brighter red stripes in his mane turned out nice!
The Night Pride Series - Autopsy
The Night Pride Series is, or should I say, was a fan-animated YouTube series that was meant to serve as both a prequel and sequel to The Lion Guard. The first four episodes took place before the events of the series and focused on the Night Pride's backstory, explaining the deaths of Rani and Baliyo's parents, (Sãhasí and Ãnanda) died, and how Rani got her scar on her foreleg. The rest of the series would've taken place after the events of The Lion Guard's series finale, Return to the Pride Lands, featuring Kion and the Lion Guard as adults and focusing on the next generation at the Tree of Life, including Kion and Rani's children.
It began production as early as March of 2020, was officially announced to the public in September of 2020, and was slated for a release of March of 2021. However, due to controversy involving the show's creator, the series was cancelled on February 5th, 2021 before any episodes were released.
And now, 4 years after the doomsday, one of the lead writers, Kaytoart (A.K.A. mudconk on Tumblr) has uploaded an autopsy video that heavily analyzes all 15 episodes of the series' first season and the content thereof that never saw the light of day, including, but not limited to songs, artwork, refsheets, script details, and characters. They provide their own input about the series' writing, and offer rewrite pitches.
I was a voice-actor on the project, as the tiger villain Omari, who appeared in the second episode, "The Clan of the High Cliffs." I never got to do any official voicework for the series (beyond my auditions for the character, which were recorded by 14 yr old me without a microphone so of course it's... shit) because we never got that far enough in production. I say this to paint a picture as to how debilitating the cancellation was in terms of the content that people had spent so much time and energy into for the series; content that up until now, was practicially invisible to the general public sphere and would've under different circumstances, became lost media.
I'm really glad that Kayto managed to get this together, if nothing else, to give closure to fans who were disappointed to see the show disappear into the void, and more importantly, for those of us on the team that never fully got to share our dedication and pride to the world.
With all that being said, I would 100% recommend watching this video. It's very well put together, and it reveals a lot about the series that many don't fully know (for example, the death of Rani's father, Sãhasí). If you are someone who was at all disappointed by the downfall of the series, whether you were a fan anticipating the series' release, or a former team-member upset at how everything went down, this video will be incredibly cathartic. And if you're someone who has no idea about what the Night Pride Series is/was then, consider this a neat little fandom history lesson for the day.
Rani 🤎🤎🤎
I love how Baliyo's design was obviously inspired by one of Nuka's earlier designs.
And this one might be a stretch, but it's possible that Nirmala's design might've taken some inspiration from these earlier designs of Zira and the background Outlander lionesses.
You thought I was done with the Night Pride redesigns? Haha no (I say this like these aren't from over 2 years ago.)
Rani and Baliyo are tigers. They are THE iconic Asian big cat so this is pretty self-explanatory. Janna is also a tiger because she's their grandmother and that was a pretty important element of both her and Rani's character so I wasn't going to change that. I genuinely think I popped off with Baliyo's design ngl.
Nirmala is a dhole/red dog! She already has a very pretty design so I didn't change too much, just a few features to suit the species I changed her to! Dholes are pretty rare animals and it was mentioned Nirmala arrived from outside the tree of life so I thought this seemed like a good choice for her.
Surak was a challenge. Coming up with an idea of him was why this took me so long. Canonically, he is Rani and Baliyo's uncle so going by that, he should be a tiger. However, I kind of want to have another animal as part of the group and iirc, him being related to Rani and Baliyo wasn't particularly relevant? So i made him a water buffalo! Least happy with his design because translating his design elements to a completely different species was a pain and I'm not familiar with drawing bovines.
I looked up what species of owl Ullu was supposed to be and I left more confused than I started. On one wiki, she's stated to be a Scops owl. Alright, I can kind of see that. But on another wiki, it claimed she was an eagle-owl of all things. Found out most people seem to go with the eagle-owl for her species (despite the scops owl making a lot more sense based on her size) so I redesigned her to look more like a Eurasian eagle-owl! Kept the markings minimal so the design wouldn't be too cluttered.
