I've seen a neat post made by @xyeh2o about the origins of Nightwing powers; it inspired me a bit to think about it on my own
And I really like scientificiest headcanons possible, so here you go:
- Colors exist because when a light wave of a certain length hits an object, the nature of what builds it bounces part of the light and absorbs the rest. So if you have a red carpet, it's red because it absorbs every color of the light ray besides red (that bounces off the carpet and is perceived by your eye).
- Sometimes when the material is special and you light it with a special type of wave (electron wave, different kind of electromagnetic wave) it can get partially absorbed, "energised" and let out a much different type of wave. That's in short how radiation lamps work (anode gets hit by fast electron current, "absorbs" them partially and lets out X radiation).
So imagine wof moons are made by a special kind of rock that absorbs their sun's lightwaves (or solar wind) and then emits (or reflects) a special kind of electromagnetic wave that can mess up a bit a dragon's head. It gets particularly strong when they're in full moon.
Why Nightwings, not any other tribe then?
Nightwings are black-scaled (black meaning they absorb almost all of the light wave, only a tiny bit bounces off), used to live in tall, rocky mountains high up in the sky (thin cloud / vegetation cover) and their tradition is to leave their also black eggs (with perhaps thin, easy to penetrate with waves shell) as close to the stars as possible. They're also nocturnal, so after years and years of moons' influence they might develop some sort of special connection to them.
Every moon gives the dragonet special power, so they could be made of a bit different types of rocks. The radiation particularly strongly affects the dragonet in earliest stages of development, when it's most vulnerable to the surroundings, especially when it's about to hatch.
- And a random headcanon but I believe seers could be paid *a lot* to foresee when the hatching days would be perfect for young dragonets, so rich families could think when it'd be best to conceive an heir with the strongest possible powers.
Also, random funfact - other kingdoms where the cloud cover is thin (moons influence should be stronger) are Ice Kingdom, Sand Kingdom, Sky Kingdom. That's where most "original" animuses were found in the past.
also shoutout to @nighwings who keeps my blog beautiful because she knows my password and i don’t even think i know my password i love her for it, so go follow her and give her smooches bc she deserves them
