Tzimisce fashion show ft. Nikifor and Laszlo the Revenant
round 1, poll 2
which one do you like better?
Widok na dworzec (A view of the railway station) by Nikifor
Pogrzeb huculski (A hutsul funeral) by Teodor Axentowicz
Widok na dworzec:
painted circa 1935
so Nikifor was a Lemko painter who lived in poverty in Krynica-Zdrój
he was self-taught, painted on any sheet of paper he could find, mostly panoramas of Krynica
probably had some kind of intellectual disability
he had difficulties writing; the captions he wrote on his paintings are full of spelling errors
considered one of the most prominent representants of naive art
so anywayyy there is a gallery of his art in Krynica and i absolutely adore it, not only this one but all of them. the lines, the colours, the perspective! just lovely. and Nikifor himself was such an interesting figure in art history
Pogrzeb huculski:
painted in 1882
it's one of Axentowicz's many paintings depicting Hutsul culture
the landscape! the beautiful greek catholic church!
i do love funeral scenes and i do love snowy landscapes
the little kid on the right is probably my favourite detail here tho. if you zoom in she's looking right at you. creepy baby
there is something really precious to me about a funeral being such a colourful scene against the empty winter landscape
check out more of their works: Nikifor, Axentowicz
On the second floor of the Ukrainian Museum in the East Village, visitors are transported to the distinctive landscape of the Carpathian Mountains through more than 100 watercolors and sketches by the self-taught Lemko artist Nikifor (1895–1968). Born with a speech impediment that made him unintelligible to many people, Nikifor turned to drawing as a means of communication. He almost obsessively depicted the world around him, creating anywhere from a dozen to 100 sketches and paintings a day.
Curated by Myroslava Mudrak, The Ultimate Outsider is a compelling introduction to the artist, who is largely unknown in the United States despite being one of Central Europe’s most famous outsider artists.

What is your favorite thing about Vasha, Ilya, Kleos, Suuki, and Nikifor? What is your least favorite thing? If you could write one AU for them, what would it be?
What is your favorite thing about Vasha, Ilya, Kleos, Suuki, and Nikifor?
Vasha, the protagonist: He’s kind, but in a really human way. He still has internalized biases and makes stupid mistakes and doesn’t know where to draw the line, but he tries to be compassionate and keep an open mind.
Ilya, Vasha’s brother: He fidgets constantly.
Kleos, mysterious stranger: What don’t I like about Kleos is the real question ;)
Suuki, enemy princess: She likes to approach things logically and hates it when people take longer then necessary to reach a decision, which I relate to a lot.
Nikifor, Vasha father: My precious child who can do no wrong only terrible things. He does everything he does because he loves his family and his people.
What is your least favorite thing?
Vasha: He’s monotonous to write. Which is a double edged sword because on one hand I love that he doesn’t try to be anything special; he’s just human and he knows it. But on the other hand, most of the more eccentric characters are a lot more fun then he is…
Ilya: Could do with less ambition. If only he didn’t want to take over the world at practically any cost.
Kleos: It’s so hard to get anyone to trust them, mostly because no one should trust them. Trusting Kleos is a bad idea.
Suuki: Her sarcasm and emotional outbursts come off as very ‘angsty teenager,’ though technically she is barely sixteen.
Nikifor: Spoilers, my dear. Spoilers.
If you could write one AU for them, what would it be?
Vasha: Modern AU where Vasha is the heir to an oil company, but wants to sell everything to fund conservation efforts. He goes camping every weekend with his mix-bred draft horse and his mutt rescue, and takes pictures of the wildlife.
Ilya: Any AU where Ilya and Zaid go on fun, traditional quest-adventures, fighting monsters and sleeping in random inns, and exploring deserted mines and things. (Also, they have a dragon.)
Kleos: AU where a certain thing didn’t happen to Kleos when they were younger, and lived out very different teenage years as a result and is happy.
Suuki: Sci-fi AU where Suuki is a cyborg princess who has to come up with crazy genius science in order to save her planet.
Nikifor: Supernatural AU where vampire!Nikifor decides to quit the supernatural scene in order to run a start up zoo.
