A Royal Affair is a romantic, elegant, and useful history lesson about Denmark during the Age of Enlightenment. At the Philly Film Festival last month director/co-writer Nikolaj Arcel and co-writer Rasmus Heisterberg, who both did the screenplay for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (the Swedish version, obviously), came to the theater for a Q and A. They said that the story of A Royal Affair was ALWAYS taught at their schools in Denmark and for some reason US historians/teachers never talk about it. That's funny because it's so true! Why do we always leave Danish history out of the picture? We learn about the French Revolution and the Spanish Inquisition and the Renaissance, but never Denmark. NEVER. It's our loss. A Royal Affair deals with a shocking scandal that happened in the country in the 18th century where Queen Caroline Mathilde had an affair with the King's physician, Johann Friedrich Struensee. This is a perfect example of when historical events can make for a terrific movie.
Caroline (Alicia Vikander, who resembles a Danish Leighton Meester) is sent from England to Denmark to marry King Christian VII (Mikkel Boe Folsgaard), the most revolting, horrid man on the planet. He's mentally ill for sure, and though historians have never figured out what he had it looks like he had some form of autism. When she first meets him, he hides behind a tree like a shy boy going to school for the first time. When she tries to make love to him on their wedding night he calls her ugly and forces her to arouse him in the most awkward, unromantic way possible. It's movies like this that make me so proud that the history of marriage has changed and is nowhere near as unfair as it was back then. A year passes and Caroline has a baby with him but she never ever spends time with her husband. The nation is also being effected by the growing ideological minds of the Enlightenment, like Rousseau and Voltaire. The government, obviously, is against this and wants to stick to the traditional values of life.
As people become more concerned with Christian's mental health they call in for a physician, Johann (Mads Mikkelsen, who you might remember as the villain from Casino Royale), to spend some time with him and make him more happy about his marriage (since all he does is cheat on her all the time). The only problem is that Johann is a big follower of the ideals of Enlightenment, which irks the aristocracy. Caroline gets closer to Johann because she accepts the ideals too. She wants to have the power to run away and be with whoever she wants to but the government isn't allowing enough freedom for the people. They soon begin an affair, and though Mikkelsen is a little old he is a suave, handsome seducer here. Johann also begins to manipulate the King into passing beneficial laws for the people. Christian accepts, but he has no idea what he's doing. His friend has only manipulated him into thinking that he's not getting enough attention in the government. Everything seems happy and perfect but soon it tumbles down. Rule number one: NEVER HAVE AN AFFAIR IF YOU'RE A QUEEN.
A Royal Affair fabulously recreates 18th century Denmark in a gorgeous manner. There aren't over-the-top long shot special effects of gigantic castles and buildings. We see the costumes, the hair, and the aristocratic lifestyle and that's all we need. We already feel like we're in that century. So sure, maybe this real-life affair that happened between Caroline and Johann hasn't already happened in other monarchies in different countries, but still, what an enjoyably romantic story to watch on screen. Mikkelsen and Vikander are superb as two people trying to escape from their lives, but the real surprise here is Folsgaard as the deranged king. He does an incredible job at portraying an idiotic man with the body of an adult but the mind of a bossy child (a HORNY bossy child, I might add). This is a movie that works both ways: as a romance/drama and as a history lesson. I love history, so I'm really proud that I can now tell people about a scandal that happened in Denmark at the peak of the Age of Enlightenment.
A Royal Affair has been selected as Denmark's nominee for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars next year. There are still some critically acclaimed foreign films that I need to see this year (like Amour and Rust and Bone), but as of right now I wouldn't mind if this took home the trophy.
