I first came across the Nikopol Trilogy in Heavy Metal magazine in 1981! Delivering newspapers on my route... one of my customers must have cleaned out their basement and had a bunch of shit at the end of their driveway for trash day. One of the things going into the trash truck the next morning was a giant cardboard box of magazines. I quickly looked inside and there were countless issues of Penthouse, Oui’, Swank and HEAVY METAL! You've never seen 10 year old kid move so fast! I grabbed it ALL!! I wasn’t going to sacrifice Heavy Metals for Swanks… it was all mine now! Balancing the box on my bike's handlebars I pedaled as quick as I could up the hill to my house, where I snuck them in and hid them in my bedroom!
Anyhow, this score of Heavy Metal's certainly have some sort responsibility to why I didn't fall out of comics as a kid and still love them to this day. I can vividly remember the pages of HM/Nikopol with this sci-fi hockey game where the players have sticks with blades at the end and it was fine to kill your opponents! The photo of that issue of Heavy Metal is that exact one that I fled Mr. and Mrs. Knight's house back in 1981!! 43 years later, I still have it!
Enki Bilal (born 7 October 1951) is a French comic book creator and film director. Born in Yugoslavia, moved to France and raised in Paris by his father at the age of 5. The central plot of the trilogy, set in 2023 Paris, follows Alcide Nikopol who returns from a 30-year sentence spent orbiting the Earth under cryopreservation to find France under fascist rule following two nuclear wars.
but this description doesn't really scratch the surface. first off, totally RECOMMENDED! weird sci-fi, beautiful art and some worthy social commentary. Egyptian gods that fly around in a Pyramid spaceship jockeying with the French government to get fuel to leave Earth. Horus possesses the human Nikopol... I don't know what else to say, you've got to read it!
