HARTFORD, CT — March 28, 2019 — Hartford Stage announced today one additional play for the Tony Award-winning regional theatre’s 56th season. Obie-Award winning playwright, actor and teaching artist Nilaja Sun will perform Pike St., her compelling new solo show.

“Pike St.” at Berkeley Rep

With an incredibly expressive face (sometimes it seems she is being created by Claymation), and a wonderfully dynamic physicality, Nilaja Sun is a virtuosic performer. 

Unfortunately, while her dialogue is terrific - flowing and natural - her feel for the dramatic arc of Pike St. is lacking: this solo show jumps too quickly from character to character and the tension fails to build as it should.

AFO's Advisory Board Member Nilaja Sun's "No Child"

Nilaja Sun effortlessly and seamlessly switches between a wide array of different characters. In this clip from her incredible solo-show, "No Child..." Sun portrays a classroom of students, a guest artist attempting to direct them in a play, as well as a burned out, discouraged teacher. The show won more than its fair share of awards and got plenty of incredible reviews. The clip barely does the show justice, but you'll get a sense of just how "superhuman" one has to be in order to switch so seamlessly between characters. Not only is the performance absolutely riveting, the political and social themes of the performance convey an urgent, powerful, and insightful message.
