Niulang (The Weaver Girl and the Cowherd)
mythology meme: mortals (7/7) — niulang
niulang is a mortal in the chinese tale the cowherd and the weaver girl. in it niulang, a cowherd, falls in love with zhinü, a goddess. their love was not allowed, and thus they were banished to opposite sides of the silver river (symbolizing the milky way galaxy). once a year, on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, a flock of magpies would form a bridge to reunite the lovers for one day.
Zhinü and Niulang
Zhinü, Weaver of the Heavens, whose hands trace rivers of starlight, whose patience turns longing into constellations, we praise the quiet strength in your devotion. Your love endures the distance of the sky itself, and in your weaving, time learns gentleness.
Niulang, Keeper of the Earth, whose heart remains steadfast beneath vast heavens, whose faith does not waver through seasons of separation, we praise your humility and constancy. Your footsteps echo with loyalty, and your love gives courage to the mortal world.
Together, across the Silver River, you teach the universe that love does not fade with distance, that even the stars must pause to honor fidelity. Once a year, when magpies form their living bridge, heaven and earth remember your names and bow to the truth of enduring union.
We offer only praise— for your patience, for your faith, for a love that outlasts silence and sky. May your story forever shine among the stars, guiding hearts with its quiet, eternal light.
